noob question- death runesFollow

#1 Apr 16 2009 at 5:06 AM Rating: Decent
so I've finally decided to play a death knight. I read the dps faq above, and have some of the basics. I know about getting the most diseases on a target. But I'm a bit confused after that.

The 2 things that confuse me the most are FU abilities and death runes. I don't understand runes at all come to think of it. Other than the 10 second c/d preventing you from using 3 in a quick sucession what's the real difference in what runes you are using? I don't get it. Do you need those runes active to use death strike? How can you tell if they are active? Actually it looks like it uses a rune, not requires one.

The main reason I ask is I took the talent death rune mastery, and don't know how to make use of this talent.

so should I do icy touch, plague strike, blood strike, then death strike (i'm only level 57 so far)? then death coil? that seems to be the best so far. But like I said, I don't understand what death runes do for me.

Death Runes can be used as either Blood, Frost or Unholy runes. So simply they're more versatile.

For example, if all I have are 2 Blood Runes, all I can do are Blood-related skills with em (Heart Strike, Pestilence, Vampiric Blood etc) I couldnt refresh my diseases for instance.

But if I have 2 Death Runes, I can do any rune-related skill. Including refreshing my diseases.

The reason the skill is worth taking is it allows you to use more damaging attacks on your rotation as you have more runes available for your big hitters.

For example when engaging a mob as a Blood DK, my first rotation will be
IT > PS > HS > HS > DS > RP dump

Now after using those pesky Frost and Unholy runes, they will refresh as Death runes, allowing me to do my more damaging..

HS > HS > HS > HS > HS > HS > RP dump

Note: These rotations are to serve as an example only, I'm a tank so I'm not sure of the best DPS rotation nowadays.

Now FU abilities are ones that use a Frost and an Unholy rune. Skills such as Scourge Strike, Obliterate and Death Strike. For some specs they are the big hitters in the rotation, but you may have heard the term in the context of people saying "Well Blood can now use Death Strike as their FU ability so they aren't tied into speccing for annihilation." this is because Blood DPS used to rely on using Obliterate as its FU ability, so speccing Annihilate in Frost was mandatory. Blizz realised this sucked and took away some creativity with Blood speccing so they buffed Death Strike to be more damaging.

Hope that was of some help.

ya I think I got it, thanks So if it came up as 6 death runes I could just hit that most damaging attack over and over. With the exception of refreshing diseases there would be little reason to use IT and PS it seems.

When do I learn 2 handed maces, or do I have to visit a trainer? As a dwarf, I am more interested in maces, though the difference isn't that great, I'll use whatever is better, esp. for levelling.

To be fair, you CAN refresh your diseases, it just requires you have two+ targets or the Glyph of Pestilence.

anyone else have their death runes suddenly change to frost/unholy runes once in a while? I've noticed that sometimes when I switch targets any death runes I had sitting there just turned back into their original rune. Hasn't happened all the time, but enough to make me realize it.

There is a timer on DRs--they won't sit there forever.

At least, mine don't. >.<
