New dual specced prot pally needs helpFollow

#1 Apr 15 2009 at 2:15 PM Rating: Decent
Just a quick questions and comment.

I'm having major mana issues, I go through my 969 rotation and it drains me fairly quickly, I'm judging wisdom. Assuming my spec is ok I'm wondering if my rotation is correct ... or more specifically in the 969 rotation what comes 1st, 2nd, 3rd and so on.

I'm doing Holy Shield, Hammer of Righteous, Judgement of Wisdom, Shield of Righteousness and Consecrate ... I might be able to get all of that off twice in one fight but than im drained.

One note, I haven't grouped yet so I'm not getting my Spiritual Attonement bonus (would that alone make the difference?). I've just been trying things out in a low level instance to get a feel for things (rotation) at this point.

Thanks for any/all suggestions.

In short. Yeah. That is all the difference in the world. Or if your in a raid and can get Kings, BoSanc, and Wis then you are pretty golden. I have not tanked yet though since 3.1 so I am not sure how much all of the regen adjustments Blizz did are affecting things.

If you're not grouping one thing you can do to really help your mana is not use Consecration. Cut that from your rotation, or at least only use it once or twice. It's a huge mana hog and in most cases by yourself isn't worth the cost to use.

Divine Plea can be a major source of mana if you use the talent that refreshes it on melee attacks. You shouldnt be needing to heal yourself very often during combat so you can have divine plea up for the whole fight with no penalty.

Are you using Blessing of Sanctuary? This is key for solo mana regen and AoE grinding. Against single targets, I tend to go OOM pretty fast as well. Even with BoSanc, Seal of Wis and judging wisdom. Protection pallys were not to meant to fight single targets. I usually try to kill in as big a group as possible if all mobs are melee. If I have to fight a caster then I try and drag a melee mob on me as well to use as a mana battery. Im still leveling as protection and AoE grinded from mid 50's to 69. Killing 10 mobs at a time is easier and faster for me than just killing a single mob one on one.

Haha - this is your problem....

That 969 thing - it's for tanking. Not for solo... (By the way - I don't use it very often when tanking... I do use it, but it's not like every pull you 969.)

The way you want to solo is to pull about 4 - 10 NON-CASTER mobs onto you. Put Healing on your melee swings, Judge for wisdom or healing depending on your needs. Use the Sanctuary Aura - you gain mana from Blocks, Dodge, Parry.

The idea of Paly Prot Solo - is to have enough mobs on you that you can constantly be dodging stuff to get mana back, but also heal or get mana through your melee swings. It takes some getting used to, but really you want to slowly kill multiple mobs on a single pull.

*A perfect example is when I solo Strat. I can only die if I get too many of those crypt fiends on me. I need mobs hitting me - they give me mana. If I have mana = I win. When ever I get in trouble - Pull more mobs.

Using Ret aura, keeping yourself healed. You have 3 'Oh-****' buttons.

First is a Pot.
Second is Bubble.
Third is LoH

It takes some getting used to and requires you to be in tanking type gear. Get a shield - throw a cheap shield spike on it.

Also - Google - "Paladin, AOE Grinding" - watch the videos.

"969" is what a lot of people use to describe the Paly tanking rotation.

It references the cool downs of our tanking abilities like our Shield, Consecrate, HoR, etc…

It produces the most threat, but is a poor choice for solo’ing because it burns a lot of mana. (Paly Tanks get the mana back by getting healed.) As you are solo – you don’t have a healer. So you burn your mana up in about 3-4 rotations.

Tankadin Solo (Which you really don’t need to do if you are Dual Spec’d now unless you are a healer) – is learning to never or rarely have downtime by learning to properly buff/judge and take down multiple mobs at one time.
