Patch 3.1 Today -- Knowledge baseFollow

#1 Apr 14 2009 at 5:01 AM Rating: Excellent
For those wondering what the best specs are for 3.1 (assuming you are geared for Ulduar):

FFB+Focus* >= FB/TTW >= Arcane > FFB >> Frost/TTW
FFB/Focus means you use some 11+ Arcane as second spec, cast Focus Magic on a buddy (Frostfire/Fire Mage or Moonkin/Shadow Priest as 2nd choice), and then spec back to FFB (0/53/18 or similar). It's not clear whether that is creative use of game mechanics or too creative
-- fixed in 3.1.1

The top 3 specs listed are also pretty close, so positions may change with the gear you do or do not have.
Glyphs: Living Bomb > FB/FFB > Molten for FB/FFB. Scorch Glyph is usually worth using for 1 mage if you have no Shadowbolt Warlock.
ABlast, AMissiles and Molten are likely the choice for Arcane. Check Rawr to verify.

Specs for 3.1:

FB/TTW
19/52/0: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent#of0Vcd0cZ0EcbRhIhVhbhct:LiV0om
Reason for Student of the Mind > Combustion (And why combustion is bad now): http://elitistjerks.com/f75/t42476-optimal_sets_item_discussion/p10/#post1187177

Arcane/IV
57/3/11: work in progress (still looking into student of the mind changes to see if it is worth picking up)

FFB
0/53/18 (or similar) still the standard as far as I know.

Glyphs
Fireball/Frostfire:
Living Bomb > Fireball/Frostfire > Molten Armor > Scorch
Arcane:
Arcane Blast > Arcane Missiles > Molten Armor

Has anyone thought up an ultimate trash build yet? Maximum AoE and burstyness on quick dying trash. Then switch to max single target for the boss. It was just something I was thinking about in the back of my mind but I have not put together anything specifically spec wise for the idea yet.

I don't really know what the trash make-up is and if there is any CC required. If we go back to single-target it will most likely be arcane because of their very fast burst, if AoE frostfire or frost would win because of blizzard (or frostfire with double layer flamestrike + blizzard)

Anobix -

Are you saying you go for the Focus to buff someone with one of your 2x Spec. Then go back to your regular FFB/18 spec to actually DPS?

If so - would it make sense, instead of going FFB+Focus, to go deep arcane (For bursty fights) with your standard FFB (53/18) for more standard DPS fights?

I ask because it seems like having two very similar specs for your duel spec - though, I could have completely read you wrong from the start... I'm reading your first post as Spec 1 = Deep fire w/ Focus. Spec 2 = Deep fire /w AoE

Edit: Spelling

The gist would be to have 1 spec that is standard FFB spec, and have 1 spec that is arcane or arcane/fire (that will have focus).

Switch to the arcane-ish spec, pop focus on a target, switch back to FFB and have at it.

I will probably go arcane and FFB as my two specs.

You can double layer flamestrike? I've been doing FS + Blizzard on bigger trash pulls. If I can throw two down, it'll be ridiculous, haha.

rank 7 + rank 8 flamestrike that is

Anobix, I decided to play around with the typical 57/3/11 Arcane spec with the increase need for spirit now. Would you mind looking at my spec from my link to the armory in my sig and tell me what you think?

It looks perfect to me. I personally like to put a point in slow for grinding/etc and I moved the other point out of stability into sotm to get a tiny bit more spirit (I don't think it really affected me though).

So I tried out a version of the fire/FFB AOE rotation suggested by EJ:
Living Bomb, Dragons Breath, (instant) Flamestrike, Frost Nova, Blastwave, (instant) Flamestrike, blizzard till cooldowns are up

It does plenty of damage! Is it really necessary though, do people do this? It uses a ton of mana, and I would rather keep the raid moving and not have to sit fights out drinking and worrying about using my evocate close to the boss than be king of the trash.

I'm not in Raids w/ my mage yet, but as a MT I hate when mages do this.

Look - the DPS is good with Flamestrike stacking or Blizz.

When you go in and get dead cause you're 1-shot by trash... Just avoid using the DB... Stay in the rear. I hate when my cloth wearers die tring to push out one tiny bit more DPS...

Thanks! I seem to recall you posting Arcane raiding builds before without slow in them, so I didn't think it was a good idea, but I definitely can see how it would be useful with grinding. I've considered using slow in the past, so I may do that.

EDIT: I don't know why, but the armory has my build from before the patch up. I actually put all 3 points into SotM, and took out the AM pushback points, and one of the points from the range talent. Other than that I didn't really make any changes.

Okay, I rechecked and the armory has my actual build up now. It does seem like I'm doing more dmg and have higher crits overall. I had 1.8k DPS overall in H Gundrak last night, and I also broke my previous crit record with Arcane Blast (it's now 11.2k, whereas before it was at about 8k). This is without any significant gear or enchant changes, so I'm thinking my build is doing pretty good.

updated for 3.1.1

Really no real changes, they supposidly fixed the focus magic buff 'creative use of dual spec' so the top dps spec went back to Fire/TTW

I made up my mind to keep 2 piece tier7.5 and get 2 piece tier8.5.

I'll be keeping the t7.5 shoulders because I dont like very much the 8.5 ones, and I'll get the t8.5 chest, its pretty nice.
I cant decide for the gloves and legs, I'll let it up to fate, I'll see whichever 8.5 piece ill get first.
As for the head piece, that Collar of the Wyrmhunter is sweet! If not that one, I'll keep trying for Gothik's Cowl or the Hood of Rationality, Ive had such bad luck with head pieces.

What are your plans for gearing with the new tier and Ulduar loot?
