Arcane is awkward, help!Follow

#1 Apr 11 2009 at 10:45 AM Rating: Default
So I switched to arcane, but it feels so funny. In lvl grinding, what is the primary attack spell? Barrage? Blast? Missle? Generally what I do is start with Arcane Blast and as soon as it casts, I cast slow. I then cast Arcane blast one more time and then Missle. How do you deal with multiple targets if they get the jump on you first?

In PVP, same question. What is my primary attack spell? I typically start with slow and then Arcane blast until 3 stacks and then missle. What are you using POM on? Arcane Power I just toss whenever it's up.

I know Arcane isn't mana efficient for grinding, but it's ok, I enjoy playing it. Help me with my strategy, please!

Thanks from soup.

When I am out questing I do the same as you;
AB, Slow, AB, AB, ArBar or AM if procced. This rotation will last way more than the 2 mins needed for the Evocation CD. If you do find you are running low on mana, try using ArBar one AB short.

When in PvP if I have enough room I will get a slow up on a target then hit a few AB's until I get 3 stacks then ArBar, or until AM procs.
If I have someone running at me I will slow and ArBar then get some range and try to get off an AB, keep kiting, ArBar and repeat the previous.

Ofs the PvP side is to be taken with a grain of salt as you can never guarente what how another player will react, but once you get used to the spec' everything should fall into place for you.

*edit* I tend to use my PoM on an AB as I am running away from a mob/player.

Thank you very much. You do it basically the same way I do. I actually feel like I do damage with Arcane vs Frost. I'd hate to have to spec again. :)

NP man.

It shouldn't take too long to decide what's best for you: 3 AB's or 2

With 3.1 and the changes to our Mana regen we should be able to go a bit longer using 3 AB's.

I have yet to be out DPS'd by a frost mage, but I am not 80 yet so that doesn't realy matter. I may try frost out soon and give it a proper seeing to.

There aren't really any different tools available than the other specs if you get bombarded by a group of mobs from what I've seen. If I get 2+ mobs on me, I just tend to use frost nova and strafe away and mana shield, then blizzard or another aoe and try to bring them all down without getting hit too much. You should sheep one of them too, but I always forget to do that. >.>

AoE was the same problem I had lvling with arcane. Single target was fun but multi pulls were kicking my ***. I ended up going fire because I like to AoE grind and frost was boring me.

Arcane vs Frost there is a big difference. First off, you have Ice Barrier. Second, you have Improved Blizzard. These two were always my answer to getting jumped.

I've never used Fire for leveling. I always figured it was a raiding spec. That would probably be even more awkward for me than Arcane.

You're entirely correct here. For some reason I had it in my head that you used to be fire. I'm not sure where I got that idea from. >.> To my knowledge, there isn't much of a difference between fire and arcane when dealing with groups.

You can always put points into the talent that lets you Invis automatically. Thats what I did when I was leveling as arcane. 1-70 I lvl'd as Frost, 70-80 i lvl'd as Arcane and put those points into Invis so I could get away easier. After I hit lvl 80 I respecced since my build was already craptastic.

Wouldn't that cause issues of you possibly running into another group of mobs while Invis'ed and then coming back out of it since everyone else disappears from your radar as well as you disappearing off of theirs?

No, not really. If you're not a complete dweeb, you scout out a destination point that is clear of mobs, and run there. Also, as soon as you invis, the mobs don't stop where you invis'd, they run back to where they were initially, so what I've done is just popped invis, wait a few seconds, and then come out. So, if you know where you are and are aware of your surroundings you shouldn't have a problem with using Invis.

By the time you come out of Invis, you should have FN again and you can always kite the mobs by using slow, putting on frost armor etc.

Ok so i also resepec'd arcane(lvl 75) and ive got it all figured out. AB slow AB AB AB Abarr mob dead. For me that takes out mobs with around 15khp. if u happen to run into some adds use your CC. POLYMORPH the adds n keep on killin'. Alot of mages forget about polymorphing. its the best way to buy you time to get mana, get away, or grab a kill or 2. And if u are really in a tough spot u can PoM Poly. hope this helps
