51/20/0 Divine Guardian??Follow

#1 Apr 08 2009 at 8:02 AM Rating: Default
I saw this build mentioned in a post and was just wondering if someone could explain it a little better. Pros and cons, how its used and why.

I apologize if I completely missed a post talking about this already. If such a post does exist, would someone kindly point me that direction.

Cons: You lose a lot of crit from the Retribution tree.

Pros: You can help to mitigate AoE raid/party damage.

Useful if you have good gear on a fight like Loken or Malygos with a lot of AoE damage. Not sure if it's useful on Sarth 3D - might help the tank to survive one of the buffed up breaths.

Divine Guardian is a talent in tier 4 of the Prot tree that adds a side effect to Divine Shield that, while it is active, along with absorbing 100% of incoming damage to the paladin, absorbs 30% of damage coming to everyone in the raid within 30 yards. It's basically an extra cooldown you can use when the party/raid is at maximum danger from AoE - Loken, Sapphiron, adds on Grobbulus or Sartharion... Then for other fights or if the AoE danger doesn't happen, it's a cooldown you can use on the tank (and possibly others) during a spike - a boss like Patch who soft-enrages for the last n%, a drake-enhanced Sarth breath, etc. It's better than the Hand of Sacrifice/Divine Protection combo because it's (a) automatic, and (b) raidwide.

It's changing name but not function in 3.1, but the build will be even more viable because there is a new talent on the same tier that significantly buffs Sacred Shield.

The two big negatives are that (1) you lose the 18-20 points in Ret that give you crit and other goodies, (2) there's nothing between Tier 1 and Tier 4 of Prot that are very useful for Holy, so 10 of the 20 points in Prot are "wasted". So for now it's a "trick" build.

Supposedly, the Prot tree should be getting a new talent in 3.1 that increases healing done by the paladin by 5%, with BoK going baseline. So there will be a little less filler on the way to Divine Guardian (or whatever they're going to call it.)

It's a good build for 3v3, and a fantastic build for 5v5 teams.

Yes, BoK is replaced with a +5% healing dealt and received talent. Most people will probably put at least 5 pts in Prot to get that now, and lose the last 3% crit in Ret.

Actually looks like there's less "filler" in the Prot tree for a Holydin than in Ret now, so I'm probably going to try 51/20/0 first when 3.1 comes down (going to see if my mana regen is too low without the crit talents).

Imp. Dev Aura has also been changed so you can give the +6% healing buff in any aura (handy if you don't have a Tree of Life/another Imp. Dev Aura Pally with you). And I think I read Auras are being buffed to 40 yrd range baseline.

You can get an 11 min CD LoH with talent & the new LoH glyph, I'm debating if my 3rd major glyph will be Divinity (which is changing to 2x mana and gives you the same amount, instant ~8k mana if cast on myself?) or the +30 sec on Beacon of Light.

EDIT: New Beacon of Light Glyph is +30 sec

The only thing I've found this useful for and the only time I spec this is for Sarth 3D. It's a montrous talent to have during Vesperon's Twilight Torment and to help the MT mitigate Sarth Breath's. Down side is that you lose crit and other goodies.

If you are going for Immortal, or trying to learn Sarth 3 drakes it can be a powerful tool to help mitigate splash damage at key parts of the fight. Also as others have noted its nice in 3's and 5's.

You lose 5-8% crit, 10% mana reduction to holy shock instant casts and Imp BoM etc. I prefer 51/5/15 or some play on that type of spec, but raided the last 2 weeks as 51/20/0. Mana wise and healing wise I do fine with either I simply don't like having to pop my bubble to mitigate damage, on transition to third drake I can see that its a powerful tool but there isn't a single other fight where you really need it.

And if you get the Holy pally t3 4 piece set bonus, you can have a Lay on hands with a -1 minute cooldown. Too bad you can't actually get it any more. Oh well.

What about improved devotion aura? +6% healing from any aura and 50% more armor bonus from devotion aura sound nice.

Also, if you get both, you do lose 8% crit, but being able to have 6% healing bonus 5% healing bonus and divine sacrifice any time holy shield is ready sounds really tempting.

Most raids are going to have a Prot to bring this talent, at least at the 25man level. At the 10man level I don't anticipate this would be extremely huge as 10mans are balanced around fewer assumptions as far as talents/buffs present in the raid.

And I think you got a little confused. Do you mean "Divine Sacrifice every time Divine Shield is ready"? Holy Shield is a Prot spell on 8 sec CD :P

Ha, yes oops. :P Good point about the 25s though.
