pvp prot goals?Follow

#1 Apr 04 2009 at 3:32 PM Rating: Decent
I am planning on attempting to lvl my warrior again. I abandoned him at 66 shortly before wrath release. He is arms leveling spec'd atm and will prolly stay that way b/c I adore arms. The end goal of this toon was to be a pvp prot war.

Question is what stats does a pvp prot specifically look for. I have my own opinions (I thoroughly enjoy theory crafting) and spent a lot of time looking into warriors before wrath with high hopes of being an unstoppable prot war in a pvp enviroment. I walked my buddy and his warrior through lvling and t5 tanking just from reading and learning from this site and many others.

basically just looking for prot pvp opinions from learned others, and maybe a few different specs. What stat "goals" am I looking to achieve ie block rating or value, significance of "tanking" stats in pvp enviroment, what would a pvp prot min/maxer be looking for? I certainly didn't look very hard, but saw nothing about it sticky'd or in passed posts.

any comments or elitist flaming appreciated

You know in PvP you can't hold people's aggro so the idea of tanking in PvP requires very silly people in the opposing team...

... which I've been seeing A LOT. So I guess it has it's way of working.

Also, the spell reflect talent is very useful. For example if you're running the flag in warsong and you have a healer with you, the spell reflect can protect both you and the healer. It's not an invincibility, but it helps.

Stats... I suppose a ton of strenght, stamina, crit, resil... mainly strenght. I think you can get around with the normal PvP gear except that the neck, rings, cape have AP instead of STR in it, which isn't good. I don't know goals, just keep pushing up whatever you can push up.

I think PvE tanking gear is viable. So if you actually run it as a pve tank, you know.

Spec I think most will agree to go for something like a shockwave-impale build. Because shield bashes could theoretically crit for very large damage, but I am experimenting with a prot fury build, I wanted to see if I could boost survivability by specing a prot with the blood craze talent. Not sure how it will turn out, I haven't played that char much.

You can only really tank in BGs, because people are stupid. It's still an effective spec, though.

Go for Shield Block Value. With the proper gear (admittedly not the easiest thing in the world to put together) you can get to ~12k crit Shield Slams, and it'll massively reduce incoming damage to the point where you're often effectively untouchable by melee or hunters. After that, STR and Crit are pretty key; other defensive stats aren't really important for PvProt, although a bit of Resil here and there doesn't go astray.

Ive gotten 19k shield slam crits before, well ok just once :p, i also have every BiS BV peice, gemmed with str(jewlelcrafter too). I think im sitting at or above 2k block value unbuffed. The problem i have most in pvp is getting rage. I just use my pve deep wounds spec, and it works ok i guess, but im also not a pvp junky. One way i have found to get rage, and keep it up is to taunt any pets that you see onto yourself. Youd be surprised how many people dont pay attention to where their pets are in bgs. Other then that, i like to think of myself as a distraction more then anything, as it usually takes quite a few people to kill me, which allows my teamates to do what they need to.

Blowing last stand and enraged regen is amazing, especially in Wintergrasp with a few tenacity buffs. Nothing like making the other team burn through 50k+ health twice before you die.

Well so far haven't played the char much. But fighting people I encounter while leveling doesn't really turn out well. Seems the amount of extra survivability does not make up for the amount of lost dps.

Also, AoE grinding doesn't seem to turn out well on a PvP server. There's always someone there that will attack you when you have 6 mobs on you.

Lately I've been trying my luck as a prot pvp. Not so much in battlegrounds, but just to stay alive out in the field. My question is: How useful really is defense in pvp? Does block, parry and dodge apply in pvp? Or just against npc's? Also do they work against spells? Or only Melee attacks?

Thanks for the help

Block parry and dodge do work against melee attacks in pvp (not spells) but you can only parry or block attacks incoming from the front of you. This limits their utility in pvp a bit because rare is the situation that someone is just standing in front of you meleeing you toe to toe. None the less they are still viable stats in PvP because even if you are dancing around another melee, something like half of their attacks will be coming at you from the front.
