I turned holy at 80 and have been really starting to enjoy it the amin thing that is holdoing me back at the moment is lack of knoweldege of the instances and i'm sccared to cause a wipe (most of my instance work is done via pug)I have also noticed two 2 things

1 I am really struggling to heal in HoL and other AoE damage instance's

2 I seem to be really stugling with crit i know there is still upgrades for me to get but a min 5% incress seems a lot should i be getting enchants for my more permant item slots so i can swap my red gems or will it come with the remainig gear

any help or guidence would be greatly apprciated

I still cant do HoL and I have healed Naxx. You seem to be in the same position I was in a few weeks ago. I asked for help here and was given it. I will link you to my thread and you can take most of the advice there.

A few things though, I reccomend HoS Heroic, there is a nice trinket from the last boss there called Forge Ember. Get a new Libram, yours saves you 22 mana every 30 minutes... not that useful. For a sheild upgrade I would reccomend Tharon'ja's Aegis from normal DrakTharon, its not a massive upgrade but it is quite nice. Or save your emblems to buy Protective Barricade of the Light.

I was given a lot of help in my thread including lists of gear upgrades. I cant be bothered repeating it all so take a look at the thread, you might find something useful.

Well, nothing wrong with your spec - it's exactly the same as I was using before I started playing with a 51/20/0 Divine Guardian.

As for HoL, well, every class/spec has some situations they just don't like and aren't suited for - doesn't mean they can't succeed, just that it's going to be hard. AoE damage is #1 on our list, and heroic Loken is the king in that regard. I've never actually done that fight as a healer, so no specifics, but your group needs to realize what it can and can't do and adopt a strat that works with a healadin even if they prefer a strat that is suited to a priest or druid.

Your gear is pretty good for where you're at, all things considered, not at all like some of the disasters we've seen lately. As you've noticed, you've lucked into some mp5 at the expense of crit, so emphasizing crit as you upgrade would probably help - but don't worry too much about sidegrading into crit or regemming (especially away from int, you want to get to and keep at least 19k mana, preferably 20k).

Spend some badges on the libram - the one you have is basically obsolete, with seals not only not being consumed by judgement, but lasting 30 minutes now...

Get a cheap (maybe even an old-school BC) enchant on your blues and a decent enchant on the purples. Don't worry about socket bonuses unless they're really tasty or you can do double-duty with the ones you need to keep your metagem active - at this point, 8 int is worth more than 9 SP and a 6 haste socket bonus...

Some crit-tastic upgrades from heroics, rep, or AH:
Chest - Scaled Armor of Drakos from Heroic Oculus, if you're up to it. It's another instance that's damn tough for a healadin, so I skipped it.
Feet - Skywall Striders off Ionar in Heroic HoL or the equivalent Mojo-Frenzy Greaves off Moorabi in Heroic Gundrak. Or the brass ring - Poignant Sabatons are a BoE drop from Noth in Heroic Naxx and the best available until 25-man Malygos. They'll cost 2k or so, but you can pass on every boot drop for months.
Finger - Ring of Temerity from the quest in Heroic Oculus. Forget how tough the instance is, for the quest you only need the first boss, so it's taking candy. There are also boss drops from heroic VH and AN that are decent.
Hands - The T7 gloves drop in both OS and VoA, so if you can sneak into a PUG (the standards are lower than for Naxx)... Other than that, there's a mail drop from Herald Volazj in heroic Ahn'Kahet.
Neck - Titanium Spellshock or Lattice Choker of Light, depending on whether you have more cash or badges. Either will last through Naxx-10.
Shield - Every shield in normal and raid instances has crit, and none in heroics, it seems. But the badge shield will last a long time.
Shoulders - Ferocious Pauldrons of the Rhino from Gortok Palehoof in heroic UK.
Trinket - Sjonnir the Ironshaper in heroic HoS drops Forge Ember, but inevitably you'll get the other trinket he drops, Spark of Life. Have you done the quest ("Last Line of Defense" in Icecrown) that rewards Cannoneer's Fuselighter? I still use it over the Alchemsist's Stone, at least while Crazy Alchemist Potions are still bugged and don't give the Stone bonus. If you're really rich, Darkmoon Card:Greatness will fill a trinket slot forever and will provide some crit as a side effect of all that int.
Wrist - Flamebeard's Bracers from Anub'arak in heroic Azjol-Nerub are a few MP5 away from being the best available in all 10-man content, including all three raids.

Good luck, and keep at it. Knowing your class and your capabilities is more important than knowing the specifics of a particular fight - that's what will help you when and if you are on a progression track in raids.

Healing was a scary idea for me until I tried it a few times. Now I love it. I went from ret, and I'll never go back.

The more you do it, the better you get. There will be wipes, it happens. But as you get more confident in your abilities, you can do so much more to avoid disasters. And as you get geared, things get even easier.

My first healing was on HoL heroic. I was lucky to have acquired a nice stash of healing gear before I changed, and the group I went with was well geared too. They knew it was my first time, so they helped me through it. I didn't want to, but they insisted over my protests. I'm glad I did it, but, damn, Loken was tough. I had to heal through the lightning storm. Lost two people but we got him in one shot. I couldn't believe it.

I found it really helped the learning process going with friends. They can be so much more understanding than pugs.

Your gear looks good, but get some enchants. They make a difference.

Good luck and have fun.

As opposed to creating a whole new thread for the exact same issue. Here is my Holy Paladin: Drynn

I understand that I'm pretty much undergeared, and I'll follow the advice given to the OP, but what do you think of my spec? I've gone as far into ret as possible to try and maximize crit. I've been fairly successful with normal PUGs, but obviously I want to get to Naxx, which means I have to be able to handle heroics.

You could try to put another point into Sanctified Seals (3/3) for an extra 1% crit. This could come from Purifying Power (currently 2/2) or if you really want to keep that for some reason, from Improved Lay on Hands (also 2/2 currently).

For raiding, I would strongly recommend shifting your five talent points in Seals of the Pure to five in Spiritual Focus. Spiritual Focus reduces all or nearly all spell pushback for your healing spells; it really is a must have for an end-game Holy paladin.

I know you said you'll follow ElMuneco's advice to Fohalin, but it's specifically worth noting that you are obscenely low on Intellect for a level 80 and your crit percentage is suffering as a result. Quick fixes to your gear would include replacing some of your current gems with INT gems, getting +16 INT to bracers, adding Azure spellthread to your pants, replacing the mp5 enchant on your chest with a +250 mana or +all stats, and putting a belt buckle on your belt with, you guessed it, an INT gem.

When you've got some badges to spare, the healing trinket and shield should be among your first purchases from the vendor. You'll see some serious improvement to your stats from those alone!

HoL is very tough to heal properly. Doing Loken the quick way (everyone stand on the tank, nobody moves) requires everyone to have at least 15k health and you need to get everyone back to full health before the next nova. If you're specced for spamming holy light, this should be possible.

My real hate with HoL is the room before Loken, where you've got the runeshapers and the titanium vanguards. The vanguards hit for a lot and have a poison spear that needs cleansing immediately. The runeshapers have a whirlwind that must be interrupted or else it deals mega damage to the group. There's a couple of pulls where you've got a runeshaper and a vanguard and a line of sight issue. Three things that turn healing into a nightmare.

Oh and the burny things after the first boss, the bit where you run through to the stairs, that's a big pain in the butt if your dps'ers do aoe. Try to persuade them not to.

For the Loken fight, this is what I normally do.

Cast bacon on the tank. Pre-cast Holy Light on yourself to hit the second he casts nova. This will heal you and the tank up, cast Holy Shock on the DPS with lowest HP. Cast Holy light on another DPS (With my Haste my Holy Light has a 1.7 sec cast time with Light's grace). The splash healing from the glyph should have done a lot of work here so a FoL on the last dps and you are done.

If you struggle with this, here is a couple things you can do.

Bubble yourself before Nova, pre-cast the HL on a DPS.
Use Divine favour prior to Holy Shock for a crit and a 1 sec Holy Light.
If you have Divine Guardian, user it. (if you are undergeared I wouldn't recommend as you lose a lot of crit).

It took me awhile to get comfortable in these 2 instances. But it will happen eventually..so don't rush yourself. I tend to beacon the tank and myself, judge light on the boss and just go at it. Conserving Holy Shock if I need to move around more. the longer you heal the more comfortable you get...

As others have said...gem INT!!!!in almost every slot you can, and find an enchanter in your guild that you trust, send them all your greens in exchange for decent enchants.
