Healing - QuestionsFollow

I went into H.Nex last night as a healer for the first time. It was a complete train wreck. Let me explain:

My Gear: Gear is not the problem. (I’m the only Paly in my raids – Healer plate is mine by default)

My Stats: 17k Mana, 14k HP, 26+% Holy Crit, my spell power is right around 1300.

My Group: Paly tank (26k), Paly Ret, Lock, DK, Paly Heals (Me).

Well – the first boss (Frozen General Guy) was a problem – I put beacon on the tank, but I’m finding that my healing is simply rapidly switching between players and hitting them with a flash. Most people need a single flash – The Ret needs major attention at all times.

So questions:
How can I check to see if the Ret was killing himself with Recoil? I looked through the “Everything” of the combat log and I didn’t notice it – is there a better way?

Is this problem with Rets really that bad (I’m a tank – no clue about Ret). I mean – If I left this guy alone – which I did to take care of other things – he’s be <5k (more than 2/3 of total HP) in a few seconds.

Is there a way to set Omen to flash when someone (Not myself) takes agro? I think the idiot was pulling agro – and recoiling himself to death. (My Omen only flashes when I have agro and someone takes it – OR – if I don’t have agro and I take it.)

What are your healing tactics? I Beacon the tank, then whack-a-mole. I keep my 100% crit ready and don’t just use it every time it’s up. I will Shock when it’s available, I don’t “Save” it. Should I save it? I usually just hit a DPS with it and then off to the next mole…

Is that what paly healing is? Whack a mole? I’ve healed through the 50s as a priest. This just seems like it’s a race for me to do one of 4 things.

1. Little heal
2. Big Heal
3. Shock
4. Oh **** + 1, 2, or 3

No, that's what healing as a whole is, currently. With some luck some stuff there will change with the next patch, though.

Also, I'm no ret pro, but I don't think a retardin should be below 5K health in a few seconds, really. 5K is usually the mark where I throw a renew on the ret pallies in my raid, and I always let the renew finish all it's ticks before throwing another one (and it lasts 15 seconds).

What boss is the "frozen general guy"? Are you talking about Razuvius? In that case, that ret pallie might've been targeted by his abilities a lot of times (he has a single target ability that throws a ~15K DOT iirc). Could that be it?

Nexus not Naxx.

Have you checked any of the healing adds ons? Example of ret SotM/SoB recoil:

Taken from WWS so it's a bit of a mess, but the line you're interested in is Holy on line 5.

Heroic Nexus - Walk in, turn Left, Fight 1 maybe 2 of the pats in the main hall. Take your first LEFT down the ramp and you are in the curved hallway where there are a series of 4-5(?) total pulls. All the mobs look like they are in a Mage's IB. The guy in the middle is a boss. I believe he's only available on heroic.

I'm not using any healer - add ons.

What do you recommend?

The general does Whirlwind (at least the horde general does if you are alliance, I assume the alliance general does as well if you are horde). If the Ret Pally is using seal/judgement of blood (or martyr if alliance) and is just standing there when the boss does WW, he is going to take 15-18k damage in a matter of seconds on every WW. I am usually tanking, but sometimes I go on my Ret Pally for heroics. The healer always tells me, if you get beat up by a WW, back off and heal yourself, cause you messed up.

Also, 1300sp seems a bit low for a Holy Paladin in heroics. I understand that it is probably off-spec for you, but even so, 1300 seems low. 14k HP seems low as well. Your mana pool seems fine, so your INT is obviously pretty high, and your crit chance seems good. Work on getting some more stam and spellpower, and perhaps even some haste rating if you don't have much on your current holy gear.

Finally you mentioned that the Paly tank had 26k health, but did he have at least 535 defense? If his defense was < 535 he was eating the occasional crit, and an unlucky turn of the RNG where he ate 2-3 crits in a row would be an automatic wipe.

You could also recommend that the Ret use Seal of Command for this particular fight to give you less stress as a healer.

Yeah,

I forgot to mention haste - I forget what my hast is. But it says my Flash is at 1.3 seconds. I don't have a clue what that equates to (or if it even does).

I usually assume a tank is def-capped (or crit immune for those who are more **** about proper terminology). After that I start to judge them on health. By the time I start to see 27-28+ I start to judge them on gear/avoidance. So what I meant by 26k was that he was not a noob tank and was clearly geared for this instance or better. Sorry for the confusion.

Perhaps the ret was eating a WW.

But the same thing happened on the Mage boss. No one is taking any damage (Maybe a one-off here and there) and I'm spam'ing heals on this Ret.

Ehh... Try again tonight...

Ahh, Nexus. Sod me, reading error on my behalf.

Well, not much more comment then; the whirlwind would be my guess as well.

I've done H Nexus both as holy and ret, and I can confirm from both points of view that melee DPS who are not watching /will/ get chewed to bits by that WW. Even with a healer with some Naxx gear, I spent half the fight on the sidelines, what with dodging the general and self-healing my emo Martyr damage.

1300 SP is doable for Holy with a tank not undergeared, careful use of Bacon and SS (which includes both using them to best effect where appropriate and not using them at all when inappropriate!), and judging for haste. I'd still recommend, as always, concentrating on SP until 1600-1700 and letting the other stats fall where they may, as long as you don't gimp your int with more than one Titansteel piece - stick to plate/mail, and your armor mitigation and the stamina that comes naturally as the ilvl goes up should be enough that you don't have to specifically care about stam.

1300 does seem a bit low, but I don't think it's a game breaker. I hate that boss because a lot of your group forget there are also other npcs attacking, especially ranged that love to pick on healers. Take them out.
For this fight, I always put beacon on melee 2nd from tank and heal tank always. Flash of light and HS I use to keep others topped off. Your priority is keeping the tank alive. If you're running with that ret pally again, tell him to use something other than martyr if the beacon isn't healing him fast enough (it should). Make sure to use judgements of light/wis if you have the pally power, every little bit helps.
The only addons I use are for interface and DBM for raids...100% manual healing. I personally want to punch anyone in the face who says "My healbot isn't working right".
Other than that just keep at it or head down another hall and come back to him.

Good luck!
