Question about respeccing Follow

#1 Apr 01 2009 at 10:10 AM Rating: Default
I just hit 22, almost at 23 and got the Sindorei Warblade, a 2h weapon. Currently I am prot, thinking about respeccing to ret in order to more effectively use the weapon. My question is can I solo as well as I did as prot? Also, should I pay for it? Because my last respec was 5g so I know itll cost 10g or so, or should I wait for 3.1 and a possible free respec? I want to do some aoe grinding at 30 or so, so I am not sure if I should bother doing it so I can use it, but it does look really cool.

This is totally a personal choice here. Most people like to level as Ret until they at least hit 35 or 40 (and many level as Ret WELL beyond that). Seal/Judgement of Command and Pursuit of Justice, along with all of the added crit/extra damage available even early on in the Ret Tree make leveling go by very fast.

You are already Prot, and if you like the playstyle, I see no real reason to spec to Ret (especially if you are already going to be spending 10g on it) vs. staying with Prot. If you plan on being Prot when you hit 30 (and are Prot now), just suck it up and level to 30, it won't take that long.

Nothing at all wrong with leveling Prot, but you won't find any use for that 2-hander, and you probably will level a bit more slowly than a Ret would. If you like Prot, just stick with it.

I read that when specced as ret its best to deal with 1 mob at a time. Can I still take on 2 or 3 at a time? And wont the damage you take be greatly increased without a shield? Therefore not making it that great for leveling solo?

I remember even as a relatively low level taking on 3 mobs at a time with relative ease as ret. Sure you dont have a sheild, but you are still wearing Mail which gives you great protection. You can use Consecration and Ret Aura to wittle the pack down while focusing on one mob. That first mob will go down fast to your mighty crits by which time the other 2 will have taken hefty damage from your AoE and will die even faster.
As either ret, or prot you are very unlikely to die unless you completely ***** a pull and get 4+ mobs.

Thank you, I am level 23 right now, most if not all of my gear focuses on str and stam, should I look at anything else for ret?

Agility for crit chance. Strength is most important, then it is 50/50 between crit and stam.

As Ret, 3 mobs before you get plate is not hard, 4 you can do, but you may have to use a big heal or even LoH on yourself depending on how hard you are getting hit. Also, don't forget you can always bubble in a pinch too. But the simple answer is yes, especially with Ret Aura up (and you would almost never use any other Aura as a Ret Pally especially while soloing) you can easily take on 3 at a time. The speed boost from Pursuit of Justice will get you from point A to point B 15% faster as well, which makes a MUCH bigger difference than you think while you are questing. For example (this is an alliance example) think about walking from the dam in Loch Modan up to Dun Modr and then going over to get the Menethril Harbor FP. That is a LONG friggin walk. Doing that sort of thing 15% faster saves MINUTES, which adds up a lot as you are leveling. Or think about your first walk as an Ally from Menethril to Shadowfang Keep to get your Jordan's Smithing Hammer, or your first ride from Southshore to Scarlet Monastery. Any long slog sped up by 15% is a godsend.

A lot of people here are pretty darn good at leveling Paladins, and leveling as Ret is just demonstrably faster. The only exception to this is if you level as prot by a combination of grinding while questing and only doing it when you had rested XP bar to burn. Even then I bet Ret would still come out slightly ahead.

As a Ret Paladin, you want enough Stam to stay alive, enough agility to have a reasonable crit rating, and as much strength as you can possibly get. I like a decent mix of "of the Bear" and "of the Tiger" gear at the early levels and I go to "of the Beast and of the Soldier" gear at higher levels. Some Ret's will also tell you to have at least SOME INT on your gear for a bigger mana pool, but I personally never found mana to be an issue, so I largely ignore INT.

I'm new to the class and in no position to give advice, just reading through your forums here, but I wanted to throw my penny into the well on this one since I'm leveling right now (57ish at the moment). I've been leveling Ret from the start and it's by far the easiest leveling at these lower levels that I've ever done, ever, including hunter and post-cat form druid. 3 mobs at a time is no problem at all. Often just consecrate and retribution aura will have the last one down to one shot by the time I get to it, and thanks to JoL and that talent that gives you a free Flash of Light (sorry, blanking) I very rarely use my bubble. The other night I was fighting an elite my own level when my daughter had a bad dream. When I came back the mob was dead and I was standing there at 100% health and mana.

As for stats, for a while I was mixing in a little Gorilla, but since I filled in Judgements of the Wise I can't give mana away and have done away with any Int.

Edited to add: also the only class I've been able to take down one of those evil Un'Goro devilsaurs with at level, and boy howdy it was worth leveling this far just for that.
