My DPS.... sucksFollow

Short backstory... last night running H AN with guildies, some of them the more advanced raiders in our guild. They decide they want to hit all the heroic achievements, and we fail miserably time after time. Now I know that at least 3 of the guys are fully capable/geared for such a feat. I'm not sure about another DPSer, and I know I was in way over my head. I'm still fairly new to heroics, and my gear reflects that. I also don't have much experience dealing with that level of activity (honestly, I was over-whelmed by everything going on vs Hadronox with all that trash still up).

So two questions...

1. My gear/build? I thought I was happy with my output in this arms build, but at the end of this run my normally polite GM told me I sucked, followed by what I suspect was a less than sincere "jk". Do I need to be looking at Fury? Also, is my gear that horrible? I know I have some holes (dps plate belts? wtf? there's like one blue in the game) in a few slots. I also know I need some more enchants (just got the mace yesterday). Suggestions? If I move to TG/Fury, what stats do I need to be looking at (for instance instead of crit, haste or whatever).

2. Skills? There were times when I felt totally lost in those fights. I'm usually pretty comfortable in 5-mans, but as the amount of activity scales (ie heroics), I seem to go from keeping up a good rotation, to tabbing around wondering wtf I'm supposed to be fighting. So where can I hone these skills? I never raid because my schedule doesn't allow me to commit to the guild's calender. Should I be pugging raids just for experience?

Any help is appreciated. I'm fine with brutal honesty. Just frustrated because I feel like I was once a smart, capable player and am worried about building a bad rep in my guild for being a gimp.

Arms and fury are both good dps choices for specs. Gearing for either is slightly different, but each spec plays a lot more different. So, first, I'd choose whether 1 2h or 2 2h weapons is preferable.

1- Since you seem to have probs with the Arms build, here's mine for a comparison. I mainly pve, with group/raid in mind. Some talents can be traded for others ... which I've dropped some rage generation talents (Unbridled Wrath, Anger Management) since I feel I'm doing fine without them.

2- As for a rotation, Arms doesn't have one set in stone. Rend always up, keep Bladestorm on cooldown (or time it for a group pull, heroism, etc), Overpower always, Mortal Strike (helps dump extra rage), and Execute always.

Yes, it's -mostly- keeping everything on cooldown, while sometimes knowing when to use them based on circumstances... reapply Rend before mob moves away, Bladestorm like above, etc.

3- Gear & practice. Run some heroics, run 10m Vault & OS. Shouldn't have any problems pugging these really, if ya can't get in guild runs.

You can try waiting for some drops, but right off can get Spiked Titansteel Helm, Spiked Titansteel Treads, and Titansteel Destroyer crafted thru a blacksmith. These will last ya a long time.

4- Stats. Shoot for 269 hit rating to cover misses. Expertise should also be added, when reasonably possible (214 rating to cover the ~6.5% dodge of bosses, from behind). Stacking str is generally the way to go, but str/crit for yellow sockets aren't bad for socket bonuses.

Edit: Forgot to mention, I'm aware I didn't spec into a weapon type, but that's been part of my personal choices for talents. Right now, I feel like it's not as critical to my performance, with the other talents available. To each their own. /shrug

Gear is probably OK for starting heroics, though it could be stronger (Spiked Titansteel Helm, etc. as listed above).

Your spec though ...

No Improved Heroic Strike?
No Deep Wounds?
1/2 Improved Slam?
1/5 Commanding Presence?
Iron Will over Tactical Mastery?

But you picked up:

5/5 Parry?
3/5 Unbridled Wrath?
2/3 Blood Craze
1/5 Enrage?
5/5 Poleaxe spec while using a mace?
1/3 Improved Hamstring for PVE?

Seriously, your spec is all over the place and I'm not quite sure what you're trying to do with it. Clean it up or switch over to the TG build that RPZip listed in the other "help my DPS" thread on the main page. For now at least, TG will do more damage, though Arms can certainly put down some hurt too.

Heroics aren't that much more busy than normal dungeons. As Arms, I don't know why you wouldn't be sticking on the primary kill target while throwing in AoE (Bladestorm, Sweeping Strikes) when able.

Achievement runs in AN are hardly one of the easier Heroics to start on. Maybe you'd want to try some other, easier ones to build your confidence and sharpen your skills (and gear up) a bit.

If you're committed to Arms, you're facing the following issues;

1) Mace Spec blows. It really does. Get a Polearm or Axe (Heroic HoL has one, but there's some blue ones as well, including one from Kalu'ak rep) or at the very least a Sword (Ebon Blade rep).

2) At the moment, 54/17/0 would be a considerably better spec.

3) Arms doesn't use a rotation so much as it uses a priority system. The priority should be Rend, Mortal Strike, Execute, Overpower, and using Bladestorm whenever it's ready (combo with Sweeping Strikes on multiple mobs for bonus fun). There are exceptions, though; if a proc (TfB, for example) is about to time out you need to use it before it does, no matter what else is available.

Yeah... Axe Spec is, point for point, one of your best DPS talents. Not speccing into it if you're using an axe ranges from "that's silly" to "that's stupid".
