Calling all ex-pally tanks for a quick question....Follow

So, this question is aimed to those of you who used to be full-time pally tanks, and have now moved on to having your main character as a DK tank even after the shine of something 'new' has worn off....

... in what ways are DK's more fun than pally's?

Any input from anyone who has tried a DK but gone back to their pally would be appreciated too. :)

They're different. Completely. Nobody can tell you which type of tank you will find more enjoyable. Try them both. Decide for yourself. ... . Profit.

I find DKs play a lot like an oldschool pally at a faster pace (back when sealse were 30 second, you would juggle them, and such).

But, you also do a lot more than the oldschool pally. You generally* use 3-5 abilities per set of runes.

I dunno, I just always felt like the timing was like a slightly faster seal-juggling rotation. Crusader, judge, crusader, judge, repeat.

But, they DO play completely different. They just have a feel like you fused an old school pally with a Rogue and a Warrior (and possibly a Hunter).

Try it. You'll love it. >:D

My pally tank has far better gear, but has 3k less HP and dies faster when the healers are lazy, which pug healers usually are.

And a DK tank can actually do PvP fairly well. Pally tanks not so much. So I've given up on tanking with my pally, and even DPSing too. He's a healer, and my DK tanks.

I'm not an ex-pally (she's still my main and I <3 her), but I find I quite enjoy tanking on my DK as well. Maybe I just like tanking, but anyway...

I agree with Ehcks about the dying faster part, but only on bosses (not that trash is really a consideration anymore >.>). My DK has far more cds and assorted buttons to mash in different situations than my pally does. Personally, I find the fact that my DK can actually interrupt/control casters to be the biggest plus with regards to tanking. My pally gets Hammer of Justice, which is frankly somewhat...lacklustre compared to Strangulate, Anti-Magic Shield, etc.

I also like the fact that I don't need to completely respec to perform decently in a different role. My DK tank spec (5/5/5 lol) is not as effective at dps as my dps spec, but it's massively more effective than trying to dps as a prot pally, as well as being a lot more fun. I also continue to find Death Grip hilarious, no matter how many times I use it.

That said, as Therion says they play in completely different ways. Try both and see which you like better, it's the best way to find out.

I see where you're coming from, I didn't explain myself very well. I have a pally at level 50 (who has been ret for 49 of those levels!) and a DK sitting at 59, so I have a fair (although not entirely representative) impression of the classes as a whole.

I'm more interested in poster's experiences in tanking at end-game, when all of the abilities are available to you and you're facing Wrath content.

Idiggory and MetalM, I have the same impression as you in that there's more to do with DK tanks, its good to see its not just me! I desperately want to love my pally but ... everything just feels so *slow*.

Thanks for everyone's advice.

ROFL.

1. I have played a Ret Pally to 49 (how exactly was he ret from 1-9?) so I have a fair impression of the class in endgame tanking content!
2. I have a DK that has gotten one level after the starting zone quests, who doesn't even have Obliterate or Icebound Fortitude (let alone most other class-defining skills) yet, so I know have a fair impression of the class!

Seriously.

You just have to try them out. That is all there is to it.

Hmmm I think you misread me, you must have missed the part where I said "(although not entirely representative) impression" and "I'm more interested in poster's experiences ... when all of the abilities are available to you".

That was the reason for my post, as I was aware the experience would change significantly at level 80 when compared to my current levels.

No worries, you are right in that I do need to see which one is the best fun for me. Hopefully I can decide before both toons get to 80, haha!

My point was that you don't even have a fair impression of endgame tanking if that is all the experience you have.

Because all the tanks in the game actually play quite differently. And, with a slight exception towards DKs, they all play very differently tanking vs. DpS. DKs are similar, but still quite different (we use very similar talent builds and often have similar rotations).

My "main" is a 78 bear... I'm not amazing, I'm still learning and I'm yet to hit heroics or raids, but I'm enjoying tanking so much I'd like to try out another tanking class.

This sort of info was along the lines of what I was angling for, thanks everyone for their advice!
