This is my first time rolling a shaman and I plan on taking my time, doing instances whenever available, and also concentrating on levelling my professions. I've been enhancement specced to now (lvl 26 now) but find myself mostly healing in instances- and surprisingly really enjoying it. I have other toons (80 lock, 75 mage, 65 war) but never a healer and I think I want to concentrate and make this guy a healer long term. Even though I can easily heal instances at my level with no points in resto, is it viable to go full resto while levelling up? It's sometimes hard to find groups, so while soloing will it be much of a problem? Thanks in advance for the input.
level as enhancement. Unfortunately doing many instances while levelling is not feasible on most servers. You are still low level, so maybe you can find groups for WC (or stocks for ally), but after that instances are hard to come by. If you are persistent you may find a SM group.
Anyways stay as enhancement. You will be able to heal just find as enhance. After 60 it may become a little difficult, but with a good group you can do it. Around 71 or 72 you can switch to resto if you want to do more healing.
The biggest thing you need is not resto spec, but healing gear. At that low a level, gear with spellpower is almost impossible to come by (you might find a cloth piece or two). Mainly go with gear with int on it. Later on you'll want to concentrate on spellpower and mana per 5 seconds (mp5), and later on still accumulate some haste gear. Later you'll find mail to suit your needs. Early on you may have to go with some cloth, but try to use mail (as we don't have fade abilities priests have, you want to be able to take a hit or two). but ideally you should not being hit while healing. Not many healing maces that level, so you will have to use a staff.
But when you are solo and doing quests, use your strength, agility, and stamina gear. Just use the int gear for healing instance. Just keep the spare gear in your bags or the bank.

If you've got a dps toon who wants to level with you, leveling as resto can be VERY fun. But doing it solo is really a pain until you can get earth shield.
Once you have earth shield, it's a pretty fun spec to play solo. Like prot warriors, you kill stuff slowly, but constantly, and you'll almost never die (if you know how to drop earthbind totems that is!).

There is absolutely no need at all in anyway to go resto in order to heal untill heroics.
I decided to start healing with my shaman at level 60. I bought a couple blues and a couple greens. Along with drops/quest stuff, i had absolutely no trouble with healing any and all instances up to 80. now im resto and healing anything easily. I solo healed a 10 man VOA with a only a little bit of trouble with DPS which stubbornly stood in gas and casted.
Summary, NO NEED TO GO RESTO TILL HEROICS!!!!
