Fun with Holy NovaFollow

#1 Mar 29 2009 at 4:07 AM Rating: Good
I use Holy Nova for dailies that involve multiple mobs, or farming meat for cooking. Bind the macro below to a key and just press it repeatedly. That way you get all three spells cast with one keypress, and your PI and IF will proc any time they are up, rather than having to make a special effort to use them.

/cast [target=player] Power Infusion
/cast Inner Focus
/cast Holy Nova

Just cause I'm curious, What does your HN hit for with you gear? Does it take a full mana pool to down the group or do you usually have enough to spare in case there is any Horde lurking near by?

Good question. Last time I did AOE grinding as a priest was at about level 72 where I was taking down ~8 mobs together and doing so cost me about 95% of my mana pool. That was as disc though, it should be easier for a holy specced priest.

I have Glyphed Holy Nova it sucks *** for AOE, big time. I was going OOM trying to AOE ZF down earlier. Still come 3.1 and so long crappy Holy Nova Glyph hello lovely lovely Penance Glyph.

It does about 840 damage per mob normal, and crits for about 1250. It will normally take half my mana to kill a group, and I can run through all of it if there are several adds that join late. Mana cost in 3.1 is being reduced by 20%. I would probably avoid using it for damage if it was glyphed.

I'm not saying we are mages, but it is a fun spell to have.

That's actually great AoE damage for us priest!!

Leaving plenty of room, as you stated, for those seldom extras. I may un-glyph mine and use HN during my level grind to 80.

I rarely would use holy nova as a healing spell (hence no glyph), simply because of the mana cost and proximity requirements. I'm much more likely to use PoH for an aoe heal.

There's a couple of places where it has good use; I myself generally use it to outheal Malygos' AOE attack in phase 2. If you PoH there you'll cause massive overheal. Especially as disc, it's a great niche spell.

its nice in raid when you take minor splash dmg. i make sure a have some ranged party members near me. it seems to crit very often which shields them and you get mana if they take more splash.

its also a nice pre-fight buff, a couple HNs and your whole party is shielded. i find myself spamming it in 5mans. everyone gets heals and shield, plus the mobs drop a little faster. makes H Loken a 1min fight.

It's worth a Glyph as Disc for the reasons stated above although I wouldn't have done it as Holy but I'm sorry Penance Glyph will be swiftly replacing it...

I use it for splash damage and for 4H and similar it is very very useful, especially as my little party are all grouped up constantly it always hits us all. The raiders have got used to my spec now and the casters like to stand very close to me as a matter of course now whenever possible.

Do y'all not even use Mind Sear? Even spec'd Holy, it's more effecient and damaging (and they're not starting right on top of you). Now, the level 75 to enter makes it a little steep to start with, but it's an awesome AOE spell. Drop it on a Shadow priest and you're looking to finally compare to mages/warlocks in the AOE damage area - without blowing through your whole mana pool to do it.

I do, but it's not as effective for AOE grinding (seeing as Holy Nova also heals us and you can't keep Mind Sear up easily). I use it mainly when doing lower level content. For example, I used it on groups of mobs in the Zul'Gurub run me and a pall did some hours ago.

It might be usefull for pulling an AOE grind though, interesting idea.

Mind Sear also has the slight issue of not damaging the target, making it one of the most annoying most-used spells I've come across.

Holy Nova is a niche spell for sure, but it has uses:
--Aggro-sensitive areas, usually gauntlet events. Hall of Flame in SH, RoS trash in BT, Broodlord trash in BWL, and the like.
--Knocking off a few extra health/healing yourself when an interrupt is likely. A rogue on your tail who's watching for the Flash Heal, or the obnoxious Brittle Revenants by Dun Nifflem, are examples.
--Solo AoE damage, particularly when Shield is unavailable.
--Flag guard duty. Using HN and PS, I held a GY flag from half a dozen Horde for almost ten seconds before one of them thought to stun me. Similarly, you can use it on a flag runner (mobility is required) between cycles of Renew, PoM, and Shield.

Of course, the shiny sparkles it gives are also what make it worth casting *nods*.

Also, ChahDresh, is that a contraction of Chandra Surresh? Guess not, but it reminds me of him.

It's not, Moza; it's the name I came up with for my first character back in the stress-test beta. I wanted something that sounded orc-y, yet have an easy way for people to shorten it (because people tend to be lazy about names).
