My DPS is too lowFollow

#1 Mar 27 2009 at 8:28 PM Rating: Decent
So I respec to demo (0/41/30 fg/emb) from destro (0/14/57) for increased raid dps. For whatever reason, with hit almost capped(13.59% with Cataclysm maxxed)and 2 pieces of T7, I am putting up sub 2k dps? I am following the recomended rotation(Corruption, CoA, Immo, Incin, rinse and repeat with the occasional life tap), pretty geared according to WoW-Heroes, and working on the dagger from Kirin Tor rep. What gives? I keep hearing about great lock dps...but I am lacking.

Appreciate your thoughts.

I'm not an expert on the fel guard/emberstone build so I can't say if the rotation is right and talents are right but the first thing I noticed is that your Bonus Damage seems very low. Naturally this will improve with gear, the Kiron Tor dagger as you mentioned, but your also not enchanting things or using the proper gems. When you get the Kiron Tor dagger don't forget to grab the Arcanum of Burning Mysteries for your helm. You'll also want to start on the sons of Hodir quest chain so you can build rep with them and enchant your shoulders. Bracers, gloves, and cloak should all be enchanted as well along with your rings when you get enchanting high enough.

You have 2 green gems in your t7 chest, I could understand using green gems in green items but not tier, boost those upto blue gems and put a damage gem into your belt buckle.

When all is said and done though the true factor about lock dps is the player behind it. I know affliction and destruction are this way, not sure about demonology, but gear can only get you so far. I see lower geared locks out dps higher geared locks all the time because the class is all about knowing your priority of spells and when they should be used. Each spec has a rotation but on most fights that rotation will be broken, the high dps locks are the ones that use the right priority spells at these times while the others continue with the now broken rotation.

"There are only 2 kinds of Warlocks anymore, really crappy ones and really good ones." I've heard this said a few times in WotLK and the difference isn't gear, though it helps, it's understanding your spec and spells and when and why they should be used compared to sticking to your set rotation. If your guild uses WWS or anything of that nature it would be helpful as you could go back and study your fights. With luck you'll run a raid with one of those great dps warlocks that you can compare to, see what they do differently in the middle of battle. It's all about priorities.

in terms of rotation, drop corruption for most of the time. you only want to use corruption if molton core hasn't proc'd (once it has proc'd, and it is still up when corruption runs out, don't bother renewing it)
rotation ways it's simple. have demonic empowerment macro'd to your incinerate key and just do immolate > incinerate and then just renew immolate and CoA whenever needed.

for glyphs you should be using:

glyph of felguard
glyph of immolate
glyph of curse of agony

finally... when you say you're doing 2k dps... is this in 10/25man raids or 5man heroics? if it's in heroics then that sounds about right (it's tough to get up to max damage in a 5man, if it's in a raid.. something is wrong...

POST EDIT

just checked your gear.. 2k dps is actually probably about right looking at your +spell power and stuff.. maybe you could hit 2.5k dps but honestly.. it's your gear that's holding you back... MASSIVE lack of spell power

I kind of had the same problem, when stacking effects, and that was because I thought I had to do it in the exact same order. It also depends on if it's a boss fight, because one does not need to stack everything if the fight is short.
My DPS goes up when I start a certain way, then the rotation changes based on whatever is about to expire. If you watch your timers after you begin, alternate between burst and DOT. Everything is still there, but the DPS is sustained better because you dont have that sudden pause to re-apply all your DOT at the same time. I'm not saying wait till they are all expired, but start re-applying in that way around the time they are about to.
On boss fights, it usually: Curse (pet attack), Corruption, Shadow Bolt, Immolate, Shadow Bolt (and Siphon Life, if I start to take damage). Right now, I use the Corruption glyph, which is why I use it before Immolate for now.
I have Demonic Empowerment macroed to /petattack, and use that before anything else, then again between burst attacks.

Have you checked out your gear on http://be.imba.hu/ it gives you a good idea of the best enchants, gems, etc to make the most of the gear you have.

holy crapoly! You edited your post twice, but you still can't spell "you"? Why should I trust a post made by someone who is only semi-literate?

Actually, there IS a difference. It's in how you put yourself across, not necessarily whether you are correct or not. When you use leetspeak, improper capitalization, and poor sentence construction, you look like an uneducated dweeb who doesn't know much. Since that's how you put yourself across and you "dont care", that's got to be exactly what you are.
#12REDACTED, Posted: Apr 26 2009 at 8:23 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) OMFG! Venerable..what a waste of grammar and punctuality lessons! It's a post for a game, go back to your class room and teach the kids how to spell and don't be such a ID10T! Jeno, while not using CAPS and checking his grammar, did a nice job and is right on in his post. Spell Power rules once Hit Rating is at 202. Definitely make this your priority for this build! I run the same spec. and do all sorts of varing damage. From 1500 DPS in instances, to 3200 DPS in 25 man Naxx runs. I am still happy with build, it has great managability and crit. is good at 26%. Stamina still helps behind Spell Hit for Life Tap too.

caps are there to be abused, CAPSLOCK IS CRUISE CONTROL FOR COOL

and ya, grammar really doesn't matter that much. i almost never use capital letters how they're meant to.. though in terms of spelling and correctly spelling slang words (like " 'tis " for example) is generally prefered... but not needed seeing how many people don't speak english as their primary language on here

oh and finally... you might want to change your post dimick.. 202 hit was at level 70, at 80 it's alot more :P
#14REDACTED, Posted: Apr 26 2009 at 7:25 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Nice 202 spell hit ... hahas

Change that gem in your belt to like +19 spell damage or a hit gem. You're piling on MP5 with your rings, I'd suggest getting the valor ring for DPS and something else (10 man Naxx rings are at least on par with those healer rings). Spell Pen on your cloak? Drop that. Get 23 haste. Chestpiece go either 8 stats or 10 stats. Pants go 50 spell 20 spirit if you can, if not get the 35 spell 12 spirit. Get more out of spell damage from spirit/LT then stamina. Shoulders get grinding Sons of Hodir dailies. Tailoring will help a lot with the pants if you PL it, only takes one eternium thread to improve it. The cloak improvement is really good, I got it recently and love it as it procs regularly. Neckpiece ick, there are several other good ones (you can drop a hit gem and get the one for emblems of heroism). Gloves would probably be best for dropping and putting a 19 spell in, with the socket bonus it's better then hit. Chest it's your choice, hit is probably better. I generally only gem for hit when I have other pieces that are better when the hit on the previous piece is useless (and for socket bonuses).

Concerning Afflic vs Demon, it's up to the player as others have said. Afflic is dumb easy now. SB, Haunt, UA, Corruption, Curse, SB spam until you refresh. Maintain your DoTs, time your casts so you don't cut off the previous DoT and don't have too much downtime. If you can, get the LT glyph, combined with the T7 bonus it is so awesome. I've got a downranked LT on my bar now so I can open a fight with the proc as well as maintain it since Afflic isn't nearly as mana demanding anymore.

By the way, Ven's right. As much fun as it is to mutilate a language and to make people who read it suffer, you come across as a complete dolt. It's a forum, you've got all the time in the world to learn how to spell. There are online dictionaries. I know, I know. How else will english teachers fall asleep at night if not for crying themselves out after reading your brutal post? So because we're talking about a game, you can look like an uneducated windowlicker?
