Players who need help playing their toons...Follow

I am sure someone else has come across this before. I have a lock in its mid 60's so i feel that I have a pretty good grasp of how to play my toon. I recently started leveling an alt and have teamed up with a guildee a couple of times who is leveling a lock and is up to his early 30's. The problem is I don't feel that he understands how to play his toon and I’m not really sure how to go about clueing him in.

Here’s an example, we played last night and there was a period of about 30 mins that we played where he did not have a demon. Actually, he didn’t summon a demon until I asked him to because it was driving me nuts. I was nice about it but it just blew my mind that he had to be reminded. On top of that, he wasn’t casting spells. That’s right no spells. He was hitting stuff with his staff. Locks are spell casters and we depend on our demons to help us out. Melee attacks are not what locks do well. I know I have been known to randomly hit stuff with my staff at higher levels just because I was bored and being funny but this guy honestly doesn’t seem to get it. Leveling your weapon skill is not a good idea when the rest of your party is busting their butts to not die.

The guy seems nice enough, but he just doesn’t seem to get it. I would have figured that by level 30 he would know that demons and locks work well together and that spell casting is his job. Does anyone have any suggestions for how to enlighten this guy so that he gets more out of his toon and doesn’t get us killed when/if we group?

School of Hard Knocks is usually the most effective by my experience. Get him into groups and let him fall on his face, if he's intelligent he'll learn quickly and even come asking for help (at which point you can direct him to the willing arms of whatever communities you trust, be it here or elsewhere); if he's ignorant, well...

Tell him to come to the Alla Warlock forum and read the stickies...

Ask him why he attacks melee and not with his spells. The only reason I can think for going melee is to up your staff/sword/dagger skill, just for the heck of it. However, that's not something you should be doing when in groups. He should do it on his own time.

He should also always have a demon out. If he doesn't want it to attack, that's fine, but it'll give him a buff (imp's stam buff, for example).

If he wants a melee character, he should make a warrior, paladin, rogue... not a spell caster.

Here's an update:

Since I originally started this thread the guy in question actually has started running a new toon; a warrior in fact. I just cracked up when he told me that he felt that the warrior ran better for him.

Some people just like to do nothing more than hack and slash things. I'm just surprised that it took this guy 30 levels as a lock to figure that out.

I see loads of people with different classes making real big mistakes in their playstyles , now i am not perfect in any class and i have all but warrior and rogue as i tried them and deleted them , but at least i understand the basics and a part of my problems is i keep swapping classes and am always looking for spells/attacks i do not have.

All you can do is gently point them to these forums or ask if they want a little advice , for example in my guild there is a hunter that thought strength was a good stat , or i have seen hunters that insist on running up to mobs to try and use their hand weapons or even running without their pet out which to me is rather crazy.

i have only just started a lock and can say as a hunter lover the changes that have been made since i last had a lock which i deleted way back its a breeze now with the void as the playstyle is almost exactly the same as my hunter .

I have seen many struggle with the class they have started with and get to mid levels yet once they try a class more suited to them they fly through the levels and actually play the new class properly , i am not sure if that is because they have learnt the game or just because they are now in the right class ?.
