2's with a mage?Follow

I am a fresh level 80 druid who needs some advice on what spec might give me highest probability of success in 2’s with a mage partner (probably a terrible comp., but I am teaming up with a friend and we are just in it to hang out, get our faces kicked in, collect points, etc.).

I chose to level my druid from 68 instead of my rogue main for a change of pace as a caster, hence balance or resto spec. I figured I could fairly easily change specs between balance and resto with largely the same gear. I also thought that a moonkin and mage would have pretty good synergy with buffs, good burst damage, and good crowd control for 2’s. However, during my first few days playing battlegrounds and skirmishes at 80, I have come to the painful realization that I suck as a caster. The enormity of my ineptitude trying to kill other players and stay alive while casting is beyond measure. I understand part of the problem is being terribly out-geared, but I’m not even in the ballpark of being competitive.

So, I decided to try feral, and even in quest greens I was much more successful due to the rogue play style of constant dizzying movement and instant cast attacks. So as a stop gap measure I need to play feral for a while, but will that be the best option in the long run? Since I have very little time to play, every investment I make in gear must be worthwhile. If moonkin or resto is ultimately a much better option for pvp (and in particular 2v2 with a mage), I am up for the challenge - I will suck it up, learn to play, and gear appropriately. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not very experienced in PvP but I would think going Resto with your Mage partner would be to way to go. You can provide healing and CC while the Mage does the Burst damage. As for gear you might want to try getting a LW to make you some. There's a blue set, Overcast I think, that is has spell power and resiliance on it. It would make you more surviveable until you can get the epic PvP gear. Since you mentioned having a time issue running Heroics and raiding for emblems probably isn't an option.

As I said, I'm not the best person to talk about PvP, but this is my $0.02.

Sadly, I have the Overcast set and still get owned! Whether that is my incompetence, or an inherent problem with the current state of Resto or Balance specc'd druids, I do not know. I think resto + mage in 2's could present some problems with mana longevity. It seems a healer + (any non-mana dependent class) might just trade heals and outlast the mage's mana? That's why I thought Moonkin / Mage with a stealth/invis opening and quick cc could jump another team and hit them so hard at the beginning, one opponent might be out before they had much time to react. Same would be true of Mage/ Feral I suppose.

I guess I just need to give all the spec's a fair try to see what works best. A better question might be - which spec really needs Arena/Honor gear the most - and that is what I will spend my points on? Because if I ever do find the time, my guild has everything in the game on farm - if they drag me through one or two weeks of raiding, I would have my pick of gear. Which spec has the most pvp viable raid gear?

Boomkin pvp is a really really touchy thing. Back in s2-24 I was resto pvp and I leveled balance the whole way up. So of course when 3.0 hit I switched to boomkin. I at first hated boomkin pvp but after much, let me emphasize much, practice I became pretty good at figuring out when to blow cooldowns, use my cc and when to go nuts.

If you're up for the challenge stick with boomkin. Boomkin/Mage is a very deadly combo with the combination of your cc. Be it cyclone, frost nova, and of course counterspell. Cyclone/CS on a healer while you go nuts on the dps is a very very deadly thing.

Another thing you can do to get better, is to duel as many people as you can. It will get you to learn the different mechanics that are necessary to take down certain classes.

Also if you have 4 piece tier 7 you can use that and supplement every other piece with pvp gear. I do this and it's an attempt to maximize your burst damage as much as possible.

Just keep on trying man and you'll get there :D

Thanks for the encouragement - you may have inspired me!

One question I have been mulling over - as Boomkin, would you prefer Starfall for extra burst (and possibly cc breaks?) or go 21 into resto to get Nature's Swiftness for NSHT panic button, or NS-cyclone for spell interrupt?

My two's build for a mage/boomkin combo.

This has very little mana regen as the fights won't be lasting very long at all. It maximizes the most out of your damage and goes with starfall. I personally always want starfall because for one gcd you do a bunch of damage and it can really really ***** up a healer who all of a sudden has to pay attention to themselves when you have starfall, treants and typhoon breathing down their necks.

My basic strat for 2's with my buddy, frost dk, is this. He tries as much as possible to separate the dps from the healer while I can keep the healer busy with either cc or just a burst damage. If thats the case and I've kept the healer from doing anything but healing himself it generally allows me time to nuke the dps with a flurry of wrath or a well time SF crit.

As much as I'd love to give you the best strat to use you're gonna just have to do arena's to really learn what to do.
