80 and out of focus. Sagelike wisdom needed.Follow

#1 Mar 25 2009 at 9:26 AM Rating: Decent
After playing on and off for several years, I finally motivated myself to take a character to 80. I started fresh on a new server and pretty much quested my way through nonstop, with the exception of one visit to Ramparts in Outland. The levels seemed to fly by and at this point there are still 3 WoLK zones that I’ve essentially never set foot in (Sholazar, Icecrown, Storm Peaks) so obviously I have a lot of exploring left to do. Even Wintergrasp has just been reading material for me so far. I went with a Hemo setup almost all the way and have never had a problem soloing, for the most part using quested/crafted gear.

With leveling done for now, I find myself wanting to do some 5 man’s to get grouping experience, learn tactics, etc… I have completed Utgarde Keep, Violet Hold, Nexus, and Halls of Lightning on regular and was about 15 seconds from completing Oculus regular (died on last boss, rest of the group got credit). On the advice of another, I installed Recount to see what my dps actually was since I’d never really known. All I knew was that I had no problems killing what I want, when I needed to, to finish my quests. What I see is pretty consistently 1k-1.2k depending on the dungeon. It was definitely a shock after hearing people talk about double that, triple or more. I’ve been hesitant to respect because I love Sub so much, but I know it's needed at this point, and with dual-spec coming up I think I’m ready to experiment.

I’ve read the forums here for a long time, taken bits and pieces, and just tried to find what worked for me. Honestly, all the spreadsheets, formulas, and widely varied opinions on what stats are most important make my head spin. I was minutes away from going combat last night until reading another post trashing it.

Yes, I know I don’t have an end game pve build now and I’m aware that my gear is laughable to many. I’m trying to learn and work on it, honest. I remain guildless at this point and with children, etc… I will probably never have the time to commit regularly to a raid focused guild. What I would like, is to be able to continue to explore, finish the Northrend regular dungeons and work my way to gearing for, and being valuable in heroics. I’m not sure gear/stat/dps wise of what is expected of a rogue at this point. I’m torn between combat and mutilate, especially with 3.1 coming. I guess right now, I’m overwhelmed with choices and information and could use some constructive criticism on what to work on first.

Thanks for reading, and in advance for any wisdom you might impart.

Edit 03/25/09:
Bought mats (Ice Striker's Cloak, Trollwoven Spaulders & Girdle, Titansteel Shanker) Total cost to make all, mats and tips, 1500g. Looks like a nice start.
No Paper Cutters to be found at the moment, only Stickers and I assume I want fastest possible OH.
Will be respeccing Mutilate later tonight to start testing rotation.

Note: my rogue is all of level 35, but I do have a feral druid, which has similar gearing concerns.

That said. Get some gear. Zomg. BoE epics!

Your MH weapon is a level 74. HUGE DPS loss right there. You can get an epic cape, an epic belt, and epic shoulders from a LWer. For weapons you could buy a Shanker for a dagger if you're thinking Mutilate (which you probably should), and perhaps a Librarian's Papercutter for offhand. Don't forget some enchants on your gear. Questing in Icecrown will get you some decent items like a neck piece, trinkets, etc. You also get KotEB reputation, which you need for the best DPS head enchant.

Spec, can't say... I hear Mutilate is best, and will be even better after the patch. But your gear is low and with mining and skinning you should be rolling in gold.

To add onto what Lock said, you should really replace those weapons. If you don't have a lot of money, and want a pretty decent upgrade, the Librarian Paper Cutters normally sell around 80-110g. That is based off of the 4-5 servers I have personally been on.

On top of the BOE epics you can have created, there is also a lot of rep gear. Wowwiki has a list of the new factions on their main page. You can just click on them and view what gear/factions you should go for first.

As for specs, HaT sub spec is actually the highest dps spec in the new PTR, but considering you aren't going to be raiding you should stick with mutilate. HaT is too reliant on other people critting, so it isn't as reliable in a 5 man setting.

Make sure you go to youtube, or roguerogue.com and view the mutilate rotation video akrios has created for everyone. Mutilate is a little tricky, until you get the hang of it. You can use Shadowpanther as a great guide to see which pieces are upgrades for you, and where they drop. I use it kinda like a wishlist.

Welcome to the forums, and don't hesitate to ask if you have any more questions.

Even players without a lot of commitment time can usually find a guild that suits their needs. Find a guild that doesn't require raiding but groups together when they can. Add players, that you have a good experience with, to your friend list. I would probably experiment with combat and muti with the dual spec after 3.1 comes out. See which one you prefer. Also realize the gear between them is different as well. In other words don't try a muti build with your combat gear and expect it not to suck. Vice versa.

Quick update. Switched to Mutilate. Spent some coin. Upgraded some gear trying to focus on raising hit. Working on rep grind for more gear/chants.

DPS on boss fights where I can stay engaged is up to ~1500. I suspect part it will continue to rise with more upgrades/enchants and as I get more familiar with the rotation (although it's still hard to imagine hitting the 3k I hear people talk about, drool). My biggest challenge right now is trying to keep things up when bouncing from mob to mob on trash pulls, need to look into a timer add-on possibly?

Got blasted in a Gun PUG the other night by another rogue telling me 51/13/7 is a PVP spec, but meh. He was more interested in talking about dueling through the entire instance, and according to my meter he averaged out at 900.

No guild yet, keeping my eyes open.

Thank you all for the advice. Still reading, still learning...

Anyone who tells you 51/13/7 is a PVP spec fails. Hard. This guy is all about dueling and doesn't know about prepilate?

Anyhoo, at least until the 3.1 instant poison changes get two LPCs and dual wield em. The shanker is nowhere near the damage potential of those broken babies.

On top of this never listen to anyone who can't at least match your performance.

Not when they PvP. If they weren't recent recipients of a frontal lobe lobotomy, at least.

Good timers are absolutely essential to prioritizing actions while Mutilate specced.

I am fond of classtimer.

You can see the timers in action on my interface, here.

Looks good Eon, thank you. I'll check it out.

As for LPC, Terokkar must be an oddity, watching for a week and have yet to see one in AH or spamming trade. *shrug*

Its definitely not a spec you start with, because in lower level arenas you'll see more rogues. But higher up where all they fight is dk/pally hfb is definitely viable for now.

^^ Yeah. You don't generally roll around in pve as 54/5/12.

How did you show CPs on Classtimer? I can't find the option. It'd save some eyetravel time during my fights.
Edit: Faaaail... different addon. Note to self: Study the images properly before asking stupid questions.

That addon is Nugie Combo Bar. I've been using it since patch 2.2, and I don't know what I'd do without it.
