Well, to me it sounds like an area with a lot of Italians living there. Like Glen Cove, a few minutes from where I live. Four pizza places within a one block walk, and at least 8 total. And, a Salumeria and a Panetteria within a block of each other. An Irish-Catholic church (St Patrick's, of course), an Italian-Catholic church (St Rocco's, of course), and a Polish-Catholic church. We aren't counting the numerous Protestant, Lutheran, Jewish, and Baptist Houses of Worship.

They call them hoagies in Philly. So that's leaked into certain areas of Jersey. But they're overwhelmingly called subs.

I wonder if Raritan still calls them hoagies, considering the other local areas don't...

And we don't have a large Italian population, just a whole lot of lazy people with an annoyingly decentralized town layout.

We have Lutheran, Presbyterian, Catholic, and Baptist, at least one non-denominational, and I don't know what the last one is.

Good grocery stores will have several delis in them.

A deli primarily deals with cold meats (like salami) and cheeses. A grocery is going to generally include a deli, to sell the cold meats and cheeses, but also have various dry goods, produce, etc.

They're most common in groceries here, too. But you do get individual delis, as well. But they typically double as sandwich shops, as well, when they stand on their own. So you can buy your meats/cheeses and/or buy a sandwich and some side dishes.

Yeah, you can find a specialized shop for anything in NYC.

That said, delis, butchers, bakeries, and farmer's markets aren't terribly uncommon outside the city. Groceries are vastly more common, yes, but you'll still find these.

Specialized cheese shops you're unlikely to find outside of an urban area, though. Ditto for beaneries, tea shops, etc.

And in the end, nearly everyone buys most of their groceries from a... grocer. The other assorted shops are more supplemental, or for when you're looking for something really high quality. For instance, if you want a pork chop, you can get it at the local Shop Rite. If you want wild boar (or, I guess, I really nice pork chop), you're going to need to go to the butcher. Or, I don't know, rabbit. Never seen rabbit in the grocery, but I'm sure the butcher sells it.

I guess that comes from the specialized shops although I don't see many butchers, cheese stores or similar sell sandwiches here.

Heh, reminds me of when you would drive on highways within the bounds of NYC and you would see signs for "Shea Stadium" and other signs for "The Stadium" (that being Yankee Stadium - they sure do luv dem Yanks around here).
