I'm currently doing that sort of job (and getting paid more than professors at other universities in the country, apparently)... sitting on reddit all day and at any point between every 3 minutes and every 3 days depending on which simulation I'm running I have to check if my simulation has encountered an error or needs to be restarted.
And reading research papers and talking to my colleagues. Also, trying to understand their gossiping (in Urdu or sometimes Sindhi).
Our lab assistant is so adorable. Actually, he's the only person in my lab who isn't pretty but he will do grocery runs for us and stuff. He doesn't seem to really speak English... I'm not sure. He says Alhamdulillah every time I ask him something in Urdu, which is so awesome, and is just all around amazingly friendly. He also has a red beard.
What this is doing is giving me experience relevant to what I want to do later on no matter which career path I choose - if I end up in research, that's what I'm doing now, if I end up in development, this is counting toward 3rd world experience, and if I end up in an office I get practice wasting time on the Internet.
