Honestly, forcing all iPhone users to upgrade to the newest firmware was stupid and a bit of a **** move on Apple's part. They knew the older generations (and 3G) couldn't handle the updates. Yes, they're old phones, but some people don't go out and buy a $1000 phone (yes, that's what a new iPhone costs here) every year.
I like Apple's products, but I've no doubt that they want to pump their customers for every last penny. Most companies want to do that, but Apple seems to be pretty open about it. Unless it's not intentional, in which case they should hire a spin doctor or something.
Without carrier subsidies, that's comparable to my iPhone.
Apple charges what they charge because people have no problem paying it. It's like owning a Rolex or a Mercedes/BMW/Audi. Quality products that are also somewhat status symbols for people that are concerned about that.
And no one is ever forced to upgrade their OS. People still come into Apple stores using iOS 4 and OSX 10.4 (10.5 came out in 2007). Some features may not be there, but the functionality is still the same.
