Huh, my respect for Blizzard is just
crashing into the ground lately.
This is pathetic.
Basically:
Say you find a nice item you don't need, so you toss it on the AH and it sells for $10. If it is a piece of equipment, Blizzard will take a $1 flat fee from that. If it is a commodity of some sort, they'll take 15% (so you get $8.50 in our example).
These funds are added to your Battle.net account by default. BN funds can be used to purchase items off the AH or pay for other Blizzard services (but they
cannot be used for game time or the Blizzard store).
So, like any rational human being, you decide that you'd much rather have the money than buy items for D3 or some random WC services. You decide to transfer the money to a real account.
Now, Blizzard charges a 15% transfer fee. So you end up with $7.65 or $7.23.
Obviously, to buy that $10 item, some other person had to pay that out at some point. So Blizz is taking more than 20% of a $10 purchase.
Now take a moment to realize that spending $10 on an in-game item is actually quite insane. But maybe you'd be willing to spend a dollar or so? Too bad, minimum bid is $1.25. So let's just go with that--you sell some item for $1.25. Funny thing is, because it's a piece of equipment, Blizz still takes a dollar outright... So now you have $.25. And then they take 15% of that when you try and convert it to real money. So you end up with $.21. Blizz literally takes over 4 times what you'd get.
I understand why there are fees. This is a service that costs them money, and they want to make a profit. But THIS is ridiculous. I wasn't happy with the RMT AH in the first place. Points systems ALWAYS hurt the player. This is slightly better, since you CAN convert it back to real cash. But 15% is a crazy fee, especially when they are taking a cut
in the first place. And establishing a system where $1.25 is the minimum bid is
absolutely crazy.
