I don't get dubstep. Or rather, I don't get what makes it dubstep. It all sounds techno/dance to me. I still can't find anyone that can actually explain the difference.
Dubstep apparently started out as a UK garage/DnB hybrid with some tribal sh*t thrown in, but now it's basically dance music with a more pronounced, and wobbly, bass line, ranging from the almost unnoticeable to the
ludicrous, marked by a drop between the intro and main section of the track.
After dubstep became mainstream, people started upping the amounts of wobble bass to hilarious levels, sometimes removing the rest of the background sounds,
like so. It sounds incredible stupid, in my opinion. I prefer the bass adding to the song rather than taking from it. Nero's song
Promises is a good example of what I'd call discreet dubstep.
Generally I like dubstep more than regular dance music because the latter has a tendency to be "hard" in its style, whereas dubstep, because of the emphasis on wobble, has a more soft, almost liquid, feel to it (think non-Newtonian fluid). I love a good bass line, as long as it doesn't take over the song completely.
Oh, and Skrillex isn't dubstep. Doesn't matter how much his fans want it to be, those eighteen-year-old haiku-writing mother@#%^ers need to get off my internet and go back to whatever Starbucks they came from. I'm not saying Skrillex is bad, but
this isn't dubstep.
Edit: The young'uns today think everything with a heavy bass line is dubstep. Deadmau5 isn't dubstep, it's just Skrillex minus the random noise.
