We never really colonized Greenland. Too f**king cold. There are about 55,000 people living there right now, which puts the population density at around 0.07/sq mi. 13% (~7,000) of the population consists of ethnic Danish and others (probably that American base there), so it's not like we went there and set up shop. 50% of everyone born there migrate away at some point.
Greenland was more a case of "Hey, there's land here. See any flags? No? Okay, let's claim it and get out before our butts freeze to the deck!"
