Banking in North America in general seems to be really behind. The fact that they can charge you just for having a bank account over here made me laugh, and the fact that I can't use my debit card online and have to have a credit card for Steam/WoW/LoL pisses off both me and either of my parents, usually my dad. Either way, I decided to get a credit card. They're giving me a 2k limit, which seems like a rather large sum of money to lend a 20 year old.

My debit card works just fine for on-line purchases, and I don't have any fees on my account.

Aeth: Whether you authorize it or not, giving less reputable companies access to your bank routing number and account number gives them the ability to wreak all kinds of havoc with your financials. It's basically theft, but fighting to get your money back can be a long and drawn out process, depending on what exactly happened.

I think I have to pay something like €5/year for my account, unless I get my student financing/loan automatically added to that account, in which case it's free.
And I don't think I could get more than a €500 limit if I got a creditcard. I know myself well enough to not get one though.

Edit: Astarin, to pay for anything through online banking I get a text with a code I have to enter within 3 minutes or so for that specific payment. I'm 99% sure that nobody can subtract any amount of money from my account without either the code or my signature. (Online payments through the aforementioned service are always one time payments as well)

Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.
Since my neck and shoulders have been killing me for the last couple of days, I've had trouble falling asleep and I'm getting mighty bored of painkillers I figured I'd see how good a job alcohol does at helping me ignore pain and fall asleep. (or, yeknow, beer was for sale)
So, tipsy Aeth time!

That is nice. Mine has a 1k limit and a TERRIBLE APR rate (19.8%).Smiley: lol

It also bothers me that food is considered "merchandise." I have no clue what the practical implications of that are--it just bothers me.

I actually am trying to use it, though, even though it means paying more for everything. Establishing good credit now will only help me later. And, inversely, earning bad credit now will SUCK later.

That is a lot. Did your parents co-sign? If they did, the credit company will take their credit score into account, and your limit will increase.

The most I've ever been able to get is about $800, and that was after a year or so of paying my bill on time every month and being nearly maxed out so they could charge me more interest. -.-
Most companies start me out at $500 limits, but then again I don't have that good of credit. It's not terrible, but it isn't good either.

That's quite strange that you can't use your debit card online for things. I've always been able to use mine.

They passed laws on that credit card stuff a while back didn't they?

I remember just entering college with little to no income and I got 2 credit cards. One had a $1,000 limit, and the other had $5,000. Smiley: oyvey

Some banks here offer temporary account numbers for on-line transactions, so you can make a couple purchases and never give out your real information. That wouldn't work for recurring payments, like authorizations to a utility, or rent, or bill collectors. They're the worst for getting you to agree to a "settlement", then double or triple charging your agreed installments. I haven't had it happen to me, but I've heard enough people complaining about it.

Out of curiosity, what do you guys think of sharing a bank account when you live with or are married to someone?

My wife and I still don't have a shared bank account (other than our home loan). We both have our own businesses (pharmacy & dance school). I pay for pretty much everything though (cars, home & bills). She pays for all the food and stuff though. It works well for us but we are lucky to not have any real money issues (other than the odd nasty tax bill).

Of course, my accountant transfers some of my income to her so technically she is also paying some of my tax :)

In 2010 they passed a bunch of laws that made it extremely difficult for anyone under 21 to get a credit card without a parent or guardian cosigner.

But once I was 21, those no longer applied. I don't remember if that was the rate they gave me, or if I applied for a card for which that was the starting rate. But I'm inclined to say it was the latter.

Heh - my Visa card has a $22.5k limit atm. Had a work AMEX card that we used to put about $250k a month on - lots and lots of reward points there :)

I prefer the term eccentric, thank you very much.

And yes, given the opportunity I would walk around in a monocle and top hat/derby.

This is totally irrelevant, but I was in Brooklyn last week and ate at a French bistro that only took Amex and cash. Was really odd.

Great trout though.

I hate you a little bit right now. Not because you have that much credit available to you, but because your credit score is good enough to get that kind of credit.

Being young, stupid and thinking you're in love with some dude you met online who lives in the UK really takes it out of you financially. At least it did before the invent of Skype. -.- Not having a job takes it out of you financially too.

Not sure if this was directed at me, but I'll answer it anyways. I didn't get my parents to co-sign, but I think they took into account my savings (around 5.5k) and my salary (around 1.8k a month). With around six months of straight up saving, I should be able to go home, and maybe get my own place without getting raped financially. Although, I'm kinda sorta thinking about moving out on my own over here, since I finally got Permanent Residency, I don't get charged international rates for schooling anymore.

Pigtails, the being in love with a British guy thing doesn't have to be all bad.

Rio, I've got some nice folks in Gorgie who want to move in with me next year for the same rate I pay up here (lolPilton, right?), so I can like... help you out but you can't move in with me, probably. If you do want to come back, anyway.

I'm actually paying for my bank account at the moment as I've not got PR yet - well, I do, being European, but until I've stayed here 3 years stuff works differently; I only get an immigrant bank account which costs £8/month (or one that costs £12.50/month which I declined, I don't need to pay more just to have an overdraft), but on the plus side less than 3 years of residency in England means SAAS consider me not English and pay for my tuition fees.

I had a credit card in Germany - €50 credit limit, was mainly useful because buying plane tickets with it meant international travel insurance. "Credit score" is totally the wrong way around. The way they do it in Germany, you get an entry with the credit authority for every overdraft/credit card/debt you have and if it's too many you can't even rent a flat anymore. [Edit: And "too many" can mean one in some cases...]

Also, I think they've gotten rid of checks altogether here... they wanted to a while ago anyway.

I got about half my vaccines today. Arms hurt. Also, I need to go to a special travel vaccine place to get vaccines/meds for more exotic stuff (specifically yellow fever because UK authorities deny access to people who've been in the tropics for more than a couple of weeks if they haven't got proof of immunisation against that.

Also bought 3.5kg meat...
