I never helped much in the kitchen either but, you know, cooking is so ridiculously easy even I don't **** up often.
We also have the concept of world meals here which are boxes with a recipe and most of the ingredients. The box says what you need to get yourself (dairy, meat, vegetables) and how much of it and if you follow the simple recipe on the back of the box you'll have a meal for 2-3 people in 25 minutes. The great thing is that there's a few dozen different kinds so it's very easy to try new things.
And because it's so simple it's hard to mess up and you quickly get some cooking experience.
There is also a wealth of recipes online that anyone can make so really, saying you don't know how to cook that many things is a poor excuse.
