I wouldn't be surprised if the players from MIT were nothing special*, actually. I know someone who goes there, and have met some of his friends. They all have brilliant minds, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are good at micromanagement.
*And I'm talking relative to the rest of the competition. I'm sure any player there, regardless of where they go to school, is WELL beyond my own skill level.
And this is totally off-topic, but this reminded me of it. The friend in question also applied to CalTech, where he really wanted to go (MIT has an awesome math department, but they are more focused on the sciences where CalTech is more math-y). His mother wouldn't let him, because it was too far away.
That made me go. :/
A. He's going to school in Cambridge (across the river from Boston, MA), which is 6 hours away from our town as it is. That's far enough that he pretty much never comes home, except for breaks and such (and he spends a lot of the time there even then, because he has work).
B. A plane ride from CA to NJ is 6 hours. Since he almost NEVER comes home, it's realistically the same.
C. If your son is offered a place at one of the best schools in the world, you let him go. It isn't like he wanted to go to Oxford--I get why you wouldn't want him in another country. But this is in the states. Granted, he's STILL at one of the best schools in the world, but why make him downgrade when he got into the one better for his specialty?
