Edit: Dammit, Rio. Below is a response to idiggory.
Yeah, I don't get why, though. I've got pretty good multitasking skills in general, and I'm fairly fast on the trigger in FPS and games like World of Warcraft (PvP), but in RTS games, I suck. Like a vacuum.
Sure, I can drill myself into making buildings and units at specific times, but once the game changes, ie. if the opponent does something unexpected, it's just game over. And once I reach the point where I've gotten a bit of an army, I completely forget about macro and just focus entirely on microing what I've got.
And I also seem to be unable to learn what I experience in that game. For instance, I just played some practice matches against a medium AI and got roflstomped by an 8-minute Marauder/Marine push while I was trying to build Banshees. Next game, I tweaked my build a bit and easily deflected that push while getting Banshees in the opponent's base, raping his economy. However, if I did another game then the opponent could kill me with an identical push.
It just won't goddamn stick. And it frustrates me. Perhaps because I rushed into the game. I went from playing the single player campaign on easy with cheats (no kidding) to 2v2's with Delinja who is like Diamond league or something now. I basically did no research, still have next to no experience compared to the veterans out there, and my entire career in that game has been all about getting told what I'm doing wrong and what I'm doing right in a given moment, so there's been no gaining of knowledge, really.
In WoW, I've got years of experience, I know every class pretty well (even if it's just the basics, it still allows me to find weaknesses and exploit them) and I know my own class to the bone (despite being changed pretty drastically lately). It allows for a freedom, or a feeling of being on top, that I don't get in RTS games. If I encounter a Rogue on my Druid, I'm pretty confident that I know what I could do to attempt to win against him, using the knowledge I've gained over the years. Makes it all much more relaxed and fun, actually. In RTS games, or SC2 specifically, the thoughts going through my head when I'm playing against someone are:
Okay, build workers
Okay, get supply
Okay, woops, minimap
Okay, build some men
Crap, build more workers
Crap, supply blocked, get some supply
Crap, minimap again
Crap, more men
I'm constantly behind and it culminates when my opponent shows up and is like "Lol hai :DD" while I'm screaming "OMFG BUILD MORE WORKERS AND SUPPLY OMFG MOVE MEN MINIMAP WORKERS MINIMAP MICRO MUST... GET... MORE... STUFF!" in my head.
I guess it'll change in a couple of years, if I stick to the guns. Once I learn how to counter certain strategies, not to mention learn how to spot strategies, it'll probably get easier. And more fun.
Just wish I was in Bronze instead of Gold league, though. It's bad for the morale that I'm getting roflstomped 8 minutes into every fight and lose 0 points on it.
