Paying 40k gold for what is eventually going to be like the ilvl 200 purples in WOTLK seems silly to me. Maybe if you're progressing or something, but I wouldn't be able to justify keeping the item. 346 -> 359 is a minor upgrade.

40,000 gold is hotness.

Yeah, that's what I would do too. I don't care how good a piece of gear is, an equal or better BoP will come along eventually. 40k is not so easy to achieve. At least, not for me. :-p

You used the word "idiot"? Ahaha, that's bad.

On the other hand, I am active in a community where bots do temp-bans for certain trigger words like Candlejack because y

Seriously, though. That policy is a joke.

They're trying to make unwanted attention and embarrassment taboo. On the f'n internet.

To be fair, I've seen my fair share of stuff on the Internet that makes me want to approve of censorship.

I'm not even talking about shock websites and such, the day-to-day college cyberbullying stuff is what I feel is really really wrong and the people engaging in such behaviour should suffer because starting Facebook groups to make fun of mentally disabled people is just awful.

Giving up freedom of speech in an attempt to prevent idiocy would be, well, stupid.

The idiots will find ways around it. They always do. For instance, the guy who reported me most likely was the one I was calling an idiot. He had me suspended and his idiocy prevailed.

Well, it's actually against the college's code of conduct so it should be possible to do something about it. The main bad thing has stopped already, anyway.

Also, freedom of speech isn't exactly a European value. :P

Is this your first offense since the new forums came out? Assuming it is, a one-week suspension for that is a little excessive in my opinion, even by Blizzard's standards. The worst I would have done was give you a 24-hour suspension at most, but only if you've had a fairly recent history of causing trouble before.

Then again, I haven't been a moderator of a website with standards as harsh of those of Blizzard yet. Smiley: tongue

Infraction for Abject stupidity

I approve of this. Also the begging for hand holding and whining.

The rest, yeah that's pretty damn harsh. Especially the "1. All posters are to make an effort to communicate clearly." What if the person is not a native English speaker? We've seen examples of how people just automatically assume that people with bad grammar and spelling are stupid and not trying, here in the general forum. I can see that rule getting abused very easily. Especially if any of their mods are xenophobes.

If you want to stay on EJ, you'll learn to capitalize your sentences and your I's very quickly, along with not using abbreviations, using a spellchecker and using math in discussions and not feelings or impressions.
They're extremely harsh in their rules but they are fair.

Yeah, I'm more the type of person that goes to EJ to read up on how to play my class. I'm not the type to contribute there for various reasons, but most of all because I don't like math.

I'd probably last one post there. No, wait, maybe two.

The first one would include some kind of cutesy thing, like a smiley, or anything else that might be normal to a human, which would prompt a 'Your post contains too many human features' warning from a mod.

The second one would be a direct response to that warning and would get me banned. Smiley: grin

Edit: This guy gets it right.

You want to know why there is no meaningful discussion around here anymore? Because people like Deathwing make a post about doing some testing, which by the by is the point of these forums, "Welcome to the Elitist Jerks forums, a WoW discussion forum targeted towards topics regarding high-end raiding and analysis of game mechanics." and gets banned with the infraction of "do not beg for hand holding".

Last time I checked, and I've been a member here a spot longer than most of the Moderators that troll these forums nowadays, Deathwing was main of the main contributors in forwarding warrior DPS thinking and modeling for a long time. Furthermore if you had actually read any of the thread before the ban it was hardly hand holding. Now at least when I read the forum, I'm missing a key post. While I understand your problem with it and can quite easily find issues with all posts in every forum including my own, it nevertheless was integral to the flow of the thread.

This place is, was and should be a meritocracy, and yet the unfortunate definition is "ability and talent" not ability and no talent or vice versa. How, in all honesty, is a Moderator supposed to judge the worthiness of a post on a mechanic or a fight when their sum total raiding experience is less than or comparable my alt. Or hasn't seen even normal Nefarian, let alone heroic Maloriak to judge my post of "warrior AOE sucks, its a total detriment to my raiding and slotting on heavy AOE fights" which clearly would get an infraction despite being 100% accurate, and likely the most pressing issue facing high end warrior raiding currently. So I never made the post, and the forum and discussion was less helpful because of it.

To be clear, I'm not friends with Deathwing, and this isn't some crusade on his behalf, I'm just sad to see this place I lurked for years become a shell of its former self. Thor Kaubel may come and ban me for life, but my sentiments remain the same.

Mod didn't like that.

It's amazing people still post on EJ, considering the size of the stick the mods have up their asses these days, but I guess the info is useful.

You could refrain from using a spellchecker and just spell well because you're that amazing.

Also, I am trying to decide what to do for my coursework should I want to gain the Comp3/4 qualification (I don't need to do any of it).
Ideas (ordered by effort they would take to implement):

  • Submit my Project Euler solutions, written in Pascal, C++ and Python so far although I might switch again soon. I'd select the ones actually using efficient algorithms.
  • Submit a graphical version of the Mastermind game I'm working on as a CLI version in C++, but would possibly rewrite it in Prolog or Common Lisp for the lulz.
  • Write a basic console-based <insert protocol here> client. Most likely telnet or something. I could do this in some obscure language to troll examiners.
  • Write a priest gear/reforging optimisation addon -- this would mean I'd have to start playing again, somehow gain the money for Cata and learn lua, a language I don't need for anything else that is also pretty annoying syntax-wise. Also 4.x priest maths, but that would be the least of my problems.
  • Write some sort of OS in Haskell or ASM to troll the people who have to read my code to mark it. This is really tempting simply because it entails learning a number of really interesting things to even start it, and also because I can just troll the examiners and possibly still get a good grade, and write a @#%^ing operating system while at it! Doing it in Haskell would also probably turn my mind inside out approximately 3 times in the process.

I obviously need to get ideas approved before I can submit anything, and the only one I'm semi-sure they'll accept is (ironically) the WoW addon.

When I'm doing math, trying to not be too mean and typing quickly I make a lot more typos, the spellchecker is very good for that.

Also, I somehow always manage to misspell necessary at least once even though I know very well how it's supposed to be written.

People use EJ because it is one of the few sites that usually has up to date info. The druid forum here is excellent and always has up to date sticklys - some of the other class forums have no stickies. I haven't checked since Cata, but many of the stickies that were there all through LK were still Vanilla or BC info.

For this reason, I go to EJ's automatically to learn to play my alts rather than here where I might read a guide then realise it is 2 years old!

I come here for the company :) (and occaisional intelligent converstion!)
