So, Is Blood Just Completely Useless?Follow

Allow me to explain. I've been playing a rogue for damn near forever, but I wanted a change so after gearing up my rogue a bit I started leveling my DK and fell in love with the Blood spec. I'm currently 51/13/7. Armory link when it decides it wants to work for me again. Or just look up ***** on the Anvilmar server.

Now, I've been raiding in some PuGs and stuff because one of my guild leaders is a ******* who has a personal vendetta against me but he recently left, ninja'ing the guild bank. Last night my main guild leader, the one I like no less, expressedly forbid me from going to any raids as Blood... lolwut? We don't have any other Blood specced DKs in the guild and I explained the utility of Abominations Might, Blood Aura, and Hysteria. Unbuffed I keep up a 2200 DPS cycle and with green bracers, and blue quest reward belts and boots I was keeping up 2600 minimum on Naxx bosses. I realize Unholy would do more damage, but am I crazy in thinking the buffs I give make up for that? Is the only acceptable Blood spec now Diseaseless Blood at high levels?

Blood is fine, your problem is a severe lack of gear. Especially your weapon. Unholy beats Blood by a nice long distance until you're in, well, not blues.

I currently tank as Blood, and even with Black Ice and all epics except 1 trinket, I still notice that my DPS and threat are lower than when I was Unholy. Especially for AoE fights.

Since nearly all of Blood's damage comes from melee and strikes, you need a great weapon to do it. I wouldn't suggest Blood until something like The Jawbone or Death's Bite. The only reason I'm doing it is because I'm bored, and I found Blood has so many cooldowns I'm just about unkillable under any realistic situation.

As said, Blood requires very good gear to pull off right now. Until you get it, you'll be doing a lot less than another spec. As for the buffs, Abom's Might can be provided by hunters or enhancement shamans, hysteria is nice but there are other similar effects and may not offset your lower DPS, and Blood Aura is unneeded if you have competent healers (sure it helps, but not needed). If your RL says DPS is more important than the frills, then follow that.

That said, if you're putting out mid-2ks of damage while undergeared, you should be fine. Many of the DPS in my raid sit at 2k, and we can clear Nax easily. Unless going for some achievements, your DPS sounds fine.

Unless you're saying "I'm putting out 2.6k on Thaddius on Loatheb!" But you sound like you know enough to not make such a statement, hehe.

Blood is heavily gear dependent, as others have said. It actually has the highest damage potential right now, from what I understand, but only when your gear is gold.

Furthermore, next patch, it is getting buffed.

But, in the end, if your RL says go Unholy, you go Unholy. I doubt your guild is a democracy, so you don't really have any say.

Blood IS really nice with good gear if you have no MM Hunter or Enh Shaman. But, losing the ability to provide that is a big hit to it as fair as raid utility. And, like someone else said, Hysteria is good, but it doesn't make the tree.

Get better gear, and reunite with your beloved spec.^^

Thanks for the encouragement. I caved and I'm looking at unholy specs now. Someone in the guild mentioned that the best unholy build is a Frost/Unholy hybrid using 1 handers, but I don't have any 1 hand swords, so that could be an issue. Any suggestions for an Unholy spec other than the one in the thread on DPS Theo put together?

If you don't have 1h weapons to match your 2h, go with Unholy, especially if your guild doesn't have any. Abom's Might doesn't stack, and your gear isn't good enough to play Blood right now.

Plus, DW is getting nerfed in 3.1 so you will still need to actively seek good 2-handers for when it hits.

One thing you MUST do, regardless of spec, is get two professions to 450. There is really no reason for a raider to EVER not have theirs capped, as almost all provide a significant DpS boost (or, in the case of the three gathering, money for better enchants/gems and thus a DpS boost).

Blacksmithing will let you craft some gear that is still an upgrade for you. Plus, you get more sockets for those +16 Strength gems.

And, if you go Unholy, pick up the Scourge Strike sigil from Grizzly Hills dailies. There is also one there for Icy Touch, if you go Frost, and Death Coil (if you want to PvP as Blood or something). It'll take 3 days to get the three, doing 5 GH dailies each time.

go to the DK forums here and look for the unholy dps thread. It will tell you about rotations, spec, and gear. (I would link the actual URL but the site is down right now)

Regarding blood,
there's a difference between raid dps and personal dps.
Blood is probably the highest raid dps, assuming you dont have an enh shammy or MM hunter.
It is very gear dependent, and while it is fun to play, you'll see lower dps w/out good gearing. (i think you gear more like an arms warrior, bringing some arpen along with).

With my experience, on the 186 DPS weapons in full raid buffs (25 man) with sunders up, blood was the highest. w/out sunders it fell behind current frost and uh specs.

with 203 dps weapons, i get better damage out of frost and uh.

so scaling/gear levels matter a bit too.

Anyways, on the flip side, its not that much worse than uh, and it is playable. If the raid needs the buff its great to bring along.

Your problem seems to have absolutely nothing to do with being Blood specced or not being Unholy specced and mostly to do with an ignorant, prejudiced, elitist raid leader.

There is nothing wrong with Blood. A 2200 DPS average and 2600 DPS peak in junk gear is very respectable, and perfectly acceptable for raiding all of Naxx. (Now if we're talking about Heroic Naxx that's a different story, but I assume we're talking about regular.)

While it's true that currently Unholy is overpowered and puts out the highest pound-for-pound DPS among the three Death Knight specs, it really just should not be an issue, nor should it be the mandatory spec unless you're running with a bunch of elitests.

It isn't. It just puts out better DpS at lower gear levels.

Unholy isn't really overpowered at all, from anything I have read with real numbers.

Actually, fermented milk and cheese are two entirely different things.

Milk can be fermented into something very much like Baily's Irish Cream, whereas cheese isn't "fermented" as such. While some cheeses are made with milk that's been "soured", it isn't part of the cheese-making process.

=)
