Leveling specFollow

Why is it a bad idea to use protection while leveling compared to Ret? I am not too much for using 2h weapons. Dont you gain more survivability with a shield?

If you're asking this question, you should level as ret.

Prot is good for AoE grind melee mobs. Ret gives you enough survivability already because you get plate armor and also healing abilities.

I can only say there is no bad trees to level with but "Ret" is the easiest to level with at a decent speed , there is no reason not to choose another tree apart from that fact.

As a Prot specced Paladin, you will likely never die (unless you aggro too many casters at one time), but you will find that you do not do a tremendous amount of damage, especially at the lower levels.

The only reason to level as Prot is if you plan to do a ton of instances on the way up from 1-60 and want to tank (you can also tank in Ret spec in any dungeon prior to outlands if you use a 1-hander and a shield, so even doing a lot of instances, Prot is not really necessary).

The vast majority of Paladins choose to level as Retribution because the speed with which you kill things is just so much faster, and by the early 20s you can have 2 points in Pursuit of Justice which allows you to travel (walking or riding) 15% faster. Between 20 and 30 there are a ton of quests that have you literally running all over the place, and PoJ making that take 15% less time really adds up as you level.

There is nothing "wrong" with leveling as Prot spec. It is perfectly feasible, it just takes longer than leveling as Ret. If you chose to level as Prot, simply expect to run a lot of instances and/or have it take a bit longer to level.

In the end it is your choice, and there is really no "wrong" choice (although VERY few people level a Paladin in Holy spec). Most people simply level Ret because it really is faster that way. If you do plan on tanking and you haven't done it before, respec Prot at 60 (when you will have the vast majority of your key tanking abilities) and tank dungeons in Outlands/Northrend from 60-80. Before that, you can throw on a 1-hander and shield and put Righteous Fury up and tank in Ret Spec in any old-world dungeons, or just keep your big slow 2-hander equipped and go as DPS.

I levelled from 35-70 as protection. Its not as fast as ret, and it demands a different style of play. It can be fun rounding up 10 guys and watching them drop as you hover between 70 and 95% HP.

If you like the sword and board, go for it. There's nothing wrong with prot as a levelling spec.

My paladin is currently 66, and protection specced. I'm just using an AH shield, the 1handed sword you can get at 60 with honored rep in honor hold, and a few pieces with sockets, all of which are filled with +24 stam gems.

Some of you may laugh at this, but for me, it works. I've leveled prot since the 50's and I love it. I went back to ret recently to see if I enjoyed it more, but I had to go back. It makes the mastery quests in Nagrand so much quicker..

Before all the changes to Ret I leveled my Paladin to 60 Prot. Reckoning was a huge help. Grab 6-8 mobs > Judge > Consecrate > Alt/Tab look up stuff on the internet > Come back 2 minutes later mobs are dead. While it was nowhere as fast as Ret is today it was extremely viable and the survivability factor was incredible. However I always found the best leveling spec was the one that makes you feel most comfortable. Hell there's some people on the forums here than have leveled Holy and enjoyed it. I'd personally suggest testing out the trees as you level, especially after 60 when you have access to the 51 point talent in each tree. Find which tree suits your play style and you'll find the "correct" leveling spec for you.
