I just hit 50 on my mage an picked up Slow, but have been wondering if it has any real use in PvE?.

I have Torment the Weak and usually open with a frostbolt for the slow effect, and the 500ish damage. Now I tried using Slow which is great as it gives a higher % of slow effect yet does no damage so I tend to have to use AM and Fireblast instead of just AM.

In PvP I can see the draw of it, but it seems to be a mystery for me in PvE.
Is there a real use for it in PvE?

It is actually a great spell in pve for a few reasons, it may not do any damage, but as you noted it slows for a lot more %. It is also an instant cast and the slowing lasts a lot longer than the frostbolt slow (12 vs 5 I believe). While you cannot (at least I don't believe) put it on multiple targets, the ttw benefit makes it quite worthwhile. Although at level 50 you really miss out on some of the nicer abilities that make arcane a better spec (arcane blast and arcane barrage), where all you really have to use is arcane missiles which gives you no mobility.

Things die so fast I don't need to be mobile xD

Im finding it much more fun than Fire and a hell of a lot faster than frost.

And specially now that I have Missile barrage, Frostbolt seems even more appealing.

I will admit, Slow has kept mobs off my back when iv pulled one too many.

I'm gonna keep it for the PvP uses it has more than anything.

Based on Instant cast... maybe toss Frostbolt first, THEN Slow, then do your usual?
Just an idea :)

not really worth it, waste of a gcd if you do that.

In my experience (which is quite humble, my mage is only level 66, though respeced quite a bit between 50 ti 66) Slow starts to shine when the entire Arcane tree shines - level 64.
When you have Arcane Blast every other school pretty much gets obsolete (for single targets, as Arcane), on single mobs I go AB->Slow->AB->ABarr/AM depends on how mana efficient I want to be, how much health mob has left, ETC. That's an 8-11.5 seconds rotation that almost always kills a mob my level (didn't include haste there, it's actually tad short as you'd have 6% haste from talents).

Yes, AB is THAT strong :).

At level 66 I can (on rather short fights, such as you'll see in instances and soloing) sustain about 850 DPS self buffed, never AoEing.

On the same notion, it was far easier for me to level as Frost rather than Arcane until level 64, even though I really tried. Frost was just superior, better control and better DPS.

Happy hunting, and have a nice day,
Yuval.

when i last left you i respecced to frost for a while to give it a good shot, and actually quite liked it.

at 60 i went back to arcane for barrage, and this is where I found Slow to come into its own. Its a realy amazing skill, I'm ashamed to think I ever doubted it.

The thing taht I'm not understanding is that barrage is critting for more than my forstbolt did when I was frost, what's up with that?

Also Yuval mate you have got me all excited about AB =)

As said in another topic here, I was frost for most of my 65 levels on my mage. I respecced to fire for a bit at 60 in TBC, and then back to frost by 62. I just tried Arcane for the first time at 65. HOLY CRAP. The spec is amazing. Honestly, I can't imagine doing it without AB, though. Once you get that, you get amazing damage. It's a blast (pun intended).

Totally going to play my mage when I get home today; it's diverting my attention from my goal of leveling my rogue or getting Steamwheedle Rep with my Druid :-P

got half a level until i get AB yet, then i will see what the fuss is about.

Arcane isnt that hard without AB, jsut involves moving backwards while the GCD is rolling over.

ok im 65 now and have had a level to play with AB and;
holy Mcfeck its amazing, the 1st AB i cast crit for 3.4k and i was like WTFZOMGLOL, then the crits just kept getting higher and higher.

I was a bit unsure of how to use it at 1st, but no tend to go slow, AB, AB, ArBar or AM(if missile barrage procs). I never usually get onto a 3rd stack of AB unless its a big mob and I POM one.
Overall I love this spell, it has totally chaged my DPS into pretty good to amazing =)

sorry for turning this question thread into a mini blog, but this is the most fun I have had leveling a character since my warrior.

I would go:

AB + Slow + aBar.

If you need anything after that a fireblast can normally do the trick or a second ab.

ok I will try that thanks.
