Can anyone give an idea of what dps i should be doing in heroics? It varies from 1100 to 1800 depending on the instance.

Violet Hold usualy give me around 1800 dps but for some reason in Nexus, Old Kingdom and Azjol Nerub, it goes down to around 1100-1300.

Self buffed, my Spell Power is 1800.

Trash fights i use siphon life/corruption and rain of fire.

Boss fights i use Haunt, siphon life, corruption coa, unstable affliction, immolate, shadowbolt then drain life at under 25%.

DPS is usually higher on boss fights but drops down again during trash.

Only problem i can think of is most trash is going down to fast to get any decent damage in.

Don't worry much about throwing DoTs on trash unless your tank struggles with Aggro. Normally they will go down before the DoT can get one or two ticks. Use SoC over Rain of Fire. Your +SP should be fine. As affliction you're not going to do great DPS on trash, they just go down too fast for our ******* to have too much of an effect. SoC if your best chance of keeping up with DPS on trash. For single target trash just SBolt them.

Anything under 5100 DPS as a group is usually really slow. You should be doing 24-30% of the damage. Individual DPS should be around 1500 over-all.
In between bosses, you could just AOE everything. I have not seen to many situations where crowd control is needed in this expansion, and most of the tanks are AOE tanks lately. Rain of Fire tends to have less threat than Seed of Corruption, although its DPS is lower.

Sederix is right about the aggro, if you're pugging heroics you'll have to evaluate how well the tank is doing and whether you should do RoF over SoC. In an ideal case you will use SoC.

1500 is a good number to shoot for. If you're dipping below 1200 overall you might want to check your gear and spell rotation.

Remember that dps can be flawed. You can have the highest dps on a boss and still do less over-all damage than the tank, extreme example. If your looking only at dps and nothing else your going to gimp yourself. I know a few people that do massive dps on patchwork and thus end up with massive damage done, but when it comes to bosses where you have to move around and adjust your rotation on the fly they still have massive dps but their damage done hit's the ground.

DPS is only calculated when you are attacking(casting, spell is in the air, dots are on the target), if your running around aimlessly your not contributing to the damage done but it's doesn't affect you dps. In theory(can't play right now to test) you could start a boss pop all your trinkets and cooldowns and get 8,000 dps at the beginning and then sit in the corner the rest of the fight and still have roughly 8,000 dps when all is said and done. You can brag to everyone about your leet dps but the fact would remain that you helped the group almost none.

Affliction Warlocks are good at bosses because when everyone is moving around our dots are still ticking giving us more damage done. On the opposite end our dps during that time is going down because we aren't shadowbolting and what not, while everyone elses dps stops as they aren't fighting. This leads to locks having a lower dps but more damage done, and damage done is what you want to go for.

Basically what I'm saying is that while improving dps is good and you want to hit a certain mark, it's not the only thing you should be thinking about. Dps will change drastically depending on what group your in and what boss your facing, but if you consistently around 30% of the damage done your doing fine.
