Im currently Herbalism/Alchemist and I like the idea of a druid herbalist. However, as I look into things, and as i get closer to raiding, I find a lot of people telling me that JC, LW, BS, mining, etc. are better then either herbalism or alchemy for a druid tank (or really for anything). Is there any real advantage to druids compared to other professions? Is lifeblood a good enough advantage to justify herbalism? What would i gain for tanking with alchemy besides an extra hour on my potions? How much do I loose from tanking for having alchemy and herbalism compared to other professions? Please don't discuss what my aesthetic taste her are. I understand what my taste are, I am just wondering how much my guild would have to sacrifice in lost of tanking efficacy to compensate for my choosing my preferred profession. Thanks a lot for your help.

There is no profession that will give enough of an edge for any particular role to drop what you have already worked hard to gain. Blizzard has made an effort to make no profession a end all be all. So do what you enjoy because you enjoy it.

He's right, there's really no end-all-be-all profession

Really any of the main professions are going to be helpful in some way with better than normal enchants or items/trinkets/gems etc.

JC is arguably the best for tanking, cause the dragon's eyes prismatic gems help you fill otherwise "less than favorable" gem slots with excellent bonuses and still allow you to get the socket bonuses. Mining,BS,LW,INSC are all good 2nd profs, really its your decision.

So you are saying that the benefits from those professions aren't great enough to worry about not having them?

Worth it, yes. Gamebreaking, no.

Funny thing is, bliz did a pretty good job of giving out equivalent bonuses for every profession (when you break them down categorically) save for maybe Herbalism; for example, the bonus you get from Mixology as an alchemist is roughly equivalent to the fur linings you get as a Leatherworker, which is equivalent to the amount of extra gems you can socket as a BS...etc.

So ultimately it really doesn't make much difference. They all allow flexibility in different ways, but all end up giving you about the same total cumulative bonus to your equipment.

Well if you decide you want to not tank and be a boomkin...

LW JC is the best combo for spell casters.

While it seems BS/JC is best for melee dps with the extra slots available.

I'll be dropping herb myself for JC so I can pick up gems to fill out my meta. I f'ing hate blue slots.

The only thing i've noticed so far with mixology is that i have an extra hour on my elixirs. is there a hidden advantage im not noticing here?

You get a potency buff as well, to the tune of 30-50% depending on what type of elixir/flask it is.
