a wolf in 3.1 now has a furious howl that stacks with the raid buffs, buffing only the hunter and the pet. level 80 wolf gives 320 AP to himself and the hunter for 20 seconds and as bm the CD is 28 seconds.
20 seconds uptime with 28 seconds downtime is 20/28 ~ 71.43% uptime on the buff
the wolf also recieves, as full bm, a bonus of 85 AP from giving the hunter the 320 ap, giving the wolf 405 ap instead of 320 (i cant do the math here, but im sure someone can clarify, or go to the ptr and see for themselves)

405 wolf AP + 320 hunter AP times 71.43% uptime ~ 519 constant AP between hunter and pet (289 pet AP and 230 hunter AP)

The only downside, as with any BM pet, is if the pet dies.
Upsides are the pet can buff the hunter while engaged in a very unfriendly pet boss battles and the range on furious howl is infinite and does NOT follow LOS rules (so leave the wolf outside the closing battle door and still recieve the buff).

My question is if someone can get some numbers on a ferocity class ability that deals damage that could beat this, and im not sure on how much 230 attack power will buff a BM hunter, but im curious to see other pet's dps compared to a wolf. (keep in mind 405 AP will buff the wolf's bite too, not just white dps)

Also i dont think that the numbers would be viable for other specs, since the uptime would only be 50% and the bonus to the wolf without the pet talents is only 375 for the wolf, and since its only 50% uptime it would only be 347.5 constant AP.

(i bellieve the word is constant, im just taking into effect up and downtime, maybe the word is average? but i hope you are following me all the same lol)

From what I've seen and the napkin math I've done, it'll be good enough that I'll be using my ghost wolf for raiding. It might not be the *best* pet, but it'll be close enough, that unless some hardmode is really crazily tuned for dps he'll be fine.

is napkin dps on other abilities higher on the abilities of pets? i know that with buffs the abilities could get quite high, so are we talking enough to beat out howl?

Well after reading this post I decided to check out the wolf vs. raptor and I was slightly amazed by my readings. I know pet DPS has been tested and re-tested but the numbers I got were strange.. and my prove to me using my spiritwolf more.

Raptor: 1614 AP, has a bleed attack that also buffs AP up to 25% on crits (it's a stacking buff, up to 5 times)
I only did a 5 minute attack drill on the heroic dummy since it is hard to find time to use it when others were not. I turned off Rabid and Call (I am full BM).
In that 5 minute melee it's DPS was 268

Wolf: 1614 AP, with howl on it buffs it to 1808 (this is the old Howl, only 158AP). The howl buffed the pet 158 plus and extra 34 AP from buffing me. Using the same scenario he pumped out 403 DPS.

I realize that the raptor will scale better with raid buffs, but for solo or 5 manning it is seems like the wolf has potential. I am very curious what the new wolf howl will put out!

EDIT: for skills I was using the normal DPS setup: Cobra Reflexes, Spiked Collar and Spider's Bite ~ all maxed of course.

I can not express how much I want that to be the case.

As for wolves, meh.. don't really care.
I'll use one if they're the best dps pet (but I'd use an untextured cube if it topped dps)
