New mage lvl'ing questionFollow

#1 Mar 10 2009 at 8:31 AM Rating: Decent
First off, yes I know. Its a lvl'ing post. *sigh* I've read them all. Even the greatest mage post ever.

Now I'm NOTasking for you to tell me what to do. I'm simply asking for an opinion.

Currently I am a lvl 36 Fire mage. I've been raising him the best damage wise that I know. Trying for crits and doing dam over time.

But as of late I've had people tell me that I should switch to frost or even arcane. I try to play mostly by myself. When I get higher I plan on doing more but I'm trying to get an understand a better way to lvl.

Am I wrong to do fire? I'm criting an awful lot with my set up now, but how can I make it better?

Play whichever is fun to you. Respeccing isn't that expensive and is worth it if you are interested in changing it up. You can always go back.

You are not wrong to do fire. If you are enjoying it, then stay with it. You're leveling, do it how you feel. Can you post your spec, though, just because I'm nosey? Mine is Aeryth and should be linked in my sig. I'm trying to get Combustion unlocked ^^

NO you are right Fire is best way to level IMO and it quite fun too.
I don't suggest thinking about change until get to about 45 because changing to frost.
It to took some time before got use to frost.
I know have improve acane alot but I think need to be aleast 60 before going that route.
My reason is easy Fire is easy to learn and don't have be real deep see it's effects. Frost IMO don't shows it full beauty until gain ice barrier at level 40 that really give you that survivabity. It appears to me acane have to large mana pool or great mana regen which hard to obtain without correct gear which don't really get until you are in outworld.

Well thats where I'm at currently. I'm going to probably go farther into the fire line.

I would say any tree is ok to level with as long as you like that tree and understand its good and bad points , like fire has little in the way of slowing/stopping mobs at low level , frost has no big hits at low level and arcane takes quite a few levels to catch up with the others in damage ect.

I went frost from the start purely because i wanted time to think as i was not good at getting away at first but now i could go fire from the start as i understand the class far better.

I would say it is more a preference in your playstyle that matters most while levelling.

If you are casting fireballs you should be picking up imp fireball, .5sec/cast may not seem like a lot but it really adds up, and quickly.

Also recommend the range talent, when you can't slow the targets down, having range on them may be a good idea.

I would go this way.

I, personally, didn't take up Flame Throwing, but when I spec leveling, I usually go with a raiding spec, not a typical leveling/pvp spec. When I hit 75 I am respeccing for FFB, even though it's not optimized until 80. But, since I have done this so many times before (leveling mages, I love the class and sometimes level up different races.) I am taking liberties with my spec. Hopefully you see some improvements.

hey guys,
here is my mage atm, Spiffymcdoo
Please ignore the enchants they are jsut for leveling chanting.

Soloing/ questing is a dream. I don't know if I am right to always start with a pyro but I figure as it's the longest cast its best to get it out the way before the mob starts runnning at me =).

The only problem I seem to have is when in a group for an instance, the damage I do is great but i go through mana so fast its not funny. I'm used to playing a shaman and never drinking.

Also it's almost impossible to get a full flamestrike + blizzard channel off cos tanks jsut aren't good enough at this level, I mean we had a druid tank the other day who would pull 3 mobs then lose agro when the shaman healer cast LWH 10 seconds later.

sorry I kinda went off track a bit, but once I start it's hard to stop.

IMO fire is a great spec for lower leveling, but on my mage, I switched to arcane around 65ish and I really liked it for the higher-levels, not so sure how it does before that, though.

AHHH.....got bored the other day and started a Mage.

So anyway i'm leveling Frost as per most of the threads i've seen concerning leveling. I get bored last night (dont ask how i am able to get bored), and respec Fire.

Now I am like...LAWLZ....cause mobs are getting the taste slapped out of their mouth, most of the time before they even reach me, and mana cost is actually less.

Maybe its because just prior to this i leveled a priest, mostly as disc/holy mix, that i am so enamored by the mages ability to choke slam with ease.

Go figure..

New dude.

I had the same reaction when I changed to fire at level 60. But it wore off quickly because Pyro took soooo long to start out with, and if I didn't crit battles took a lot longer. Then I hit 65 and respecced Arcane... and fell in love with it. If you like Fire now, switch to arcane at 64 (when you get Arcane Blast). You won't regret it :)

Good grief...

I respec'd Frost, since I'm leveling, and currently a not so manly 38, and am simply wondering if at any point as Frost will others be "skeered" of me. Meaning when do I do enough damage to kill stuff really quick?

Should I have rolled a different toon? "sigh"

Respec back to fire?

"sniffle"

Frost has some nice stopping power when it comes to using shatter crits.
#15 Apr 20 2009 at 5:56 PM Rating: Decent
Yeah frost can do some pretty decent damage with crits, but the main appeal of it as a leveling spec is for survivability. If you want to do high damage while you're leveling I'd respec fire or maybe arcane.

Frost is the generally accepted leveling spec. It is also the generally accepted PVP spec. So – If you are on a PVP realm – you might consider that.

Fire and Arcane do more damage, but lack control. Leveling is about 3 things:

Killing Quickly Arcane > Fire > Frost
Arcane can burst things down while dumping mana all over the place. Fire has great Damage, though not quite as much “Throttle-Control” as Arcane. Frost is about controlling the mob and landing Shatter Crits.

Taking Very Little Damage Frost > Arcane > Fire
Frost has the best slows, snares, traps, Shields, and even an elemental buddy to help you out. Arcane has the next best shield and the best slowing effect in the game. Sadly, after that, you’re ability to avoid damage is very limited. Fire has very few abilities to avoid damage and the few that it does actually have are generally not taken by people looking for the Good-Sustained DPS that fire offers.

Minimizing Downtime (/oom) Frost > Fire > Arcane
Frost spells are generally pretty cheap and efficient. Fire tends to be less efficient. Arcane is often times a mana dumping race.

Having said all that – My first toon was a mage. His first spells were what I, mistakenly, based the rest of the entire game upon. Fire did the most damage – so I was fire. Eventually, someone told me to try frost. I did and never looked back. To frost to 70. Now I have a dual spec Frost/Arcane mage, but I’ve been using Arcane a lot solo.

Hey Locke -

Could you post a good arcane build (or your build) please? Anything you can share from a beginner arcane mage, like rotation?

With the recent repsec, I really want to try arcane and my level 62 mage is ready for a change from being a fireman.

Thanks in advance :)

The time between after you get icelance and before FFB can be very, very amusing. I'm full frost, 70, and there are some hilarious moments. I absolutely LOVE stacking icelance at the end of a frostbolt, lordy can that do some damage.
