Being protection spec, everyone automatically assumes that the tank will be marking the targets. Any addons or advice on how to do this quickly? Any macros that work well. I've tried SimpleMarker yet can't get it to work at all.

Just keybind your commonly used marks. You don't need a specific addon.

Much like sound, I was no longer aware this game had marking or CC in it.

Eh, I'll almost always mark a skull and a cross so that DPS start on the correct targets. Then again, I run PUGs a lot.

I'll mark CC more for convenience for the healer and myself than out of any huge need (for example, those stupid mobs in UK who don't want to run in and even when you have aggro will throw random spears at other people).

CC is also useful with a slightly undergeared tank if there is a larger (4-5) pull.

O, I know CC. It's a buff on a mob that keeps him from being tanked and thus allows him to run straight for the healer after the first wave of AoE hits.

Srsly, if you are not terribly undergeared and the healer knows his job, CC is more a bane than a boon.

For marking, yes, just keybind your most commonly used 2 or 3 symbols (I use skull and cross) so the DDs know what to hit first. If you don't mark anything they will just assume it's bombing time, EVEN IF THEY KNOW THE MOBS SHOULDN'T BE BOMBED. Marking/not marking kinda overwrites a few brain functions it seems...

Ok...I'll ask the question. How do you keybind the marking symbols.

You can go through Blizzard's default UI (interface menu IIRC, don't have WoW at work), and just keep scrolling down. It's there. I can post a more detailed description later if you're having trouble finding it.

Seriously, you should be able to position mobs so CC doesn't break from AoE. With even a semi-competent group, CC used when appropriate makes life easier, and a lot of healers appreciate it. Keep an eye on your CC target. If it breaks, taunt it to you.

Not that you need CC in every instance, or with every group. But just because you can tank something with no CC doesn't mean you should never use CC.

It's under you interface menu > Keybindings ... if you scroll down far enough you'll see "skull, circle, cross" etc. Then just keybind from there.

I though we'd get there. I've seen more than one occasions where the AOE classes didn't care at all about the CC, causing it to break almost immideately. But I DO appreciate it when someone CCs and they actually DO watch for it. Personally, as long as it's not really NEEDED I won't bother with CC until the other people get their CC-handling abilities up to shape again.

I'm using nothing but Automark anymore. It puts a symbol of my choice on whatever mob I am currently tanking. It's so damn easy to use.

- Install it
- Replace your abilities with short macros like:

#showtooltip
/cast !Heroic Strike
/automark 8

- enjoy having a skull on whatever target you cast Heroic Strike on.

You would of course want it tied to other high-threat, single-target abilities like Shield Slam as well. It even goes so far that it overwrites marks with a lower priority. All dps needs to do is to nuke whatever is marked with a skull. (Now don't ask me why they couldn't just do that by simply using the darn Assist button)

You must tank very differently than I do.

Very likely since I am currently doing it with a DK... Although the real difference is in the name of the abilities, the principle stays the same. You could do it with a druid bear and have Automark bound to Maul and Mangle.

What more do you need in WoTLK other than a marked "Kill"-target? By the time that target is down to like half health, each and every tanking class has build enough threat on the rest of the pull that there is just no need for anything but AOE dps to finish the rest. That I continue to (automatically) mark my current target is only to aid melee dps who aren't lucky enough to have the higher threat threshold ranged classes do.

No point in painfully marking everything up and wasting valuable time on that.

I tab through targets enough as I'm tanking that macroing a mark onto a threat move is likely to result in a skull jumping through targets and confusing the heck out of DPS. I seldom if ever stay on 1 target the whole time when tanking in WotLK. (Same reason I like to have the main assist be a DPS like a rogue, rather than me, if I'm playing with people I know).

I use Baud Mark. It has the advantage of showing the frame centered on Your cursor when You press chosen button. It's foolproof really.

I myself was never a fan of using keybinds for marking. I know that some use it with great results, but I have enough keybinds as it is. Plus with my small hands I have limited amount of convenient keybinds I can make.
