Talent Question - Improved Water ShieldFollow

First some backround. I recently got my alt Shaman to 80 and was running some things with some guildies. One of the guildies is normally a resto Shammy, but she was enchance for farming over the weekend so instead of bringing my main, they asked me to bring by not very well geared resto shammy. Overall I and they felt I did very well, but there were some points that i went OOM. The other shammy brought it to my attention that I was not recasting Water Shield mid-fight when the Orbs were consumed by crits. Another guildie mentioned that it may not be worth it to take that talent as that is time wasted recasting the Water Shield, and that w/o taking the talent I could keep my mp5 up.

So that brings me to the question, which one is right? Is it better to take the tlent and recast Water Shield mid-fight, or just not take the talent and rely on mp5 to keep my mana pool up?

If you can spare the GCDs to recast water shield when it's consumed, you will end up with a lot of extra mana from the talent, especially with the minor glyph that adds 1 orb. That's an extra 1600 mana per water shield (400 per orb x 4 orbs).

Water shield adds 100 mp5, so it would take 80 seconds of no water shield to add up to the mana you gain from that talent.

Maybe you could use floating combat text (or power auras?) to monitor when you lose the water shield buff so you remember to recast it?

Early on it's a good talent to pick up. However, once you get good raid gear it isn't needed as much and you can go without it. Once I started getting rid of my Heroes and naxx 10 gear I found that mana wasn't a problem anymore and moved the talents elsewhere.

So far in Ulduar I haven't had a need for more mana so for now I'm still going to go without the talent.

I find the 130-140 (with the glyph, don't remember the exact %) mp5 extra very useful. Besides that I don't have any issues recasting WS during the fight.

Any shaman addon (Call of Elements, TotemCaddy et cetera) will give you a warning if you don't have any elemental shield on you. Same counts for shaman weapon coating.

But for me it's not only the 100 mp5 (at leaast) that is very helpful, it's also the orbs that will give you a lot of extra mana. Besides, in heroics it's not as if you'll get hit 4 times (minor glyph to get one extra orb) by any trash pulls. So you'll have enough time to recast WS then.

What I do most of the time to buy myself some time, is hotting the tank with a Riptide and top him up, then 1,5 second should be more then enough to react your watershield. If not, the tank is either not def capped or hasn't got enough health.

So, to answer your question more directly; yes, in my opinion you should spec for the talent, as well as recast your WS when it's down. The extra mana it gives cannot be neglected. The more mana you get the more you can heal, that's kinda logical. I am in mostly nax 25 gear, with the odd 10 or heroic/rep drop, and I really notice it when I don't have my WS on, the extra mp5 is amazing.

Always always refresh water shield. It's a huge boost to regeneration. I make it a habit to refresh it when I'm down to one or two orbs since things may get hectic if you wait to zero. It doesn't cost any mana so refreshing it won't mess up your 5-second rule.
