I've been leveling a Holy Priest (holy from 28-39 for pvp & instances) So I thought when I dinged 40 I would switch to shadow to try it out ....

I feel like a friggin Sith Lord ... running through the country side killing everything i want to without ever worrying about mana, putting out way more DPS ...

I may never go back into the light this is sick!

Yea it is fun isn't it.

The first time I leveled holy all the way, but I had an opportunity on another server and decided to create and level a priest there. This time I went shadow...what a difference! I only die when I am incredibly stupid, almost never use potions, food or drink. And I slice through the content like it was butter.

I use Jame's guide, but seem to always be a level ahead of him.

This is much more fun. I plan on becoming Holy at 60 (I'm 54 now) and Disc at 70.

But with duel spec...hmmm.

Pretty sure that's because the guide is a little out dated with the new XP boosts in Vanilla and BC

Shadow was incredible for me. To-date it's probably my fastest leveling character, excluding death knight of course.

Hilarity is subjective, but 43% of my posts are lies.

That seems like a reliable number, seeing as the cake is a lie and it amounts for close to 50% of your personality.

I respecced the other day (just for a couple of days face melting fun between raids) and loved every minute. If you think it's fun now wait until you have mind sear... *drool*

Having leveled 2 holy priests, when I went horde I decided to level shadow. I am leveling like crazy and it isn't at all like pulling teeth :p

But my guild is desperate for a holy priest...when the day arrives for the respec there will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth haha...

I can't wait to be able to play shadow at the click of a button for dailies and some heroics etc. Come on 3.1 already!

i was asking a few shadow priests on my server last night what its like at level 60-80 mana-wise... especially in 5mans when you're not guaranteed a spirit tap proc.

some were saying they were always low in 5mans, others said they never had a problem. obviously gear/skill has an impact but in general, should spriests be concerned with mana in 5mans?

Yes and no. In the early 60 5-mans, if you're not healing then you'll be dpsing right along witht he other spellcasters. You'll get the killing blow just as often as they do, so depending on your spirit and intellect, you could be low on mana. You'll probably be drinking just as much as they will, however, so there's no real danger of falling behind.

In the later 60s, however, your mana efficiency in 5-mans will skyrocket after training Shadow Word: Death. Just pop it when the mob's health gets low and you will get the killing blow ~75% of the time. It'll take some practice for the timing, but you should see a drastic increase in Spirit Tap uptime.

I can get a boost from the proc on my trinket but I have also found that if you keep vampiric touch up pretty much all the time and hit mind blast as often as you can the replenishment buff can be kept up almost constantly and will greatly help you and other mana users. Replenishment regens mana for you and others in the party for 15 seconds and appears when you use mind blast while VT is active on a target.

I have limited experience as a shadow priest though so don't bank everything on it but I found it worked well for me at 80 in a couple of heroics I did as well as soloing. I also managed to use this buff to best effect to enable me to grind out a load of dailies with no downtime.

I also make sure I use my shadowfiend on boss fights as Disc to regen my mana as well as popping my arcane torrent as many times as possible. As far as I am aware as shadow these techniques still apply.

I'm loving being a Shadow Priest, even though being a healer is my calling. Smiley: grin

In 5-mans (regular) I run into mana problems due to not really having the time on trash to get a VT/MB combo going in time to proc Replenishment. In heroics, the only time I run into mana problems (if you can call it that) is on bosses. And it's only a problem if you consider finishing a boss at 13.5k mana left out of 17.6k a problem. Smiley: laugh I will miss the mana regen on Dispersion, though. Smiley: frown

As for Mind Sear ... Smiley: eek With a 5 stack of Shadow Weaving (which will happen within one mind sear, if not before), I'm hitting ~1250 per mob per tick with crits for 2500. Higher if my trinkets proc. Once you get used to it's idiosyncrasies, it's lovely. Just VT/VE/SWP/DP (if you want to waste the 4th GCD) and MB the target and MS the rest of the group down. Doing that, I can take groups of 6 or 7 at a time and the target dies at the same time as the other 5 or 6. Smiley: cool Very nice spell. I've made a couple mages jealous with it.

[Edit: Sometimes, English > me. I really dislike having CRS some ... what was I saying? Smiley: tongue -- ed.]

I was interested to see you mention arcane torrent... without being able to pop arcane torrent (ie. your toon was not a belf) would you find mana considerably more of an issue as Disc OR Shadow?

I figure on the assumpton of a 20,000 mana pool, using arcane torrent optimally returns the equivalent of 50 mp5...
which looks pretty decent.

I remember when I was leveling my shadow priest and I first got shadowform. All of a sudden instead of being a prime squishy target in cloth I was going around cloaked in black. I noticed right away that allies instead of running right at me to try and gank would suddenly hang back and get out of my way.
