Arcane 70-80?Follow

#1 Mar 04 2009 at 2:51 PM Rating: Good
Well I decided I want to level my Mage from 70-80 as my next alt. Back in the day I was a frosty but I will admit I'm pretty bored with that play style still.

I was thinking of trying a deep Arcane build instead for fun. I know they nerfed it down a bit recently but will it still be viable for leveling? I worry that I might be drinking to much in between kills. I hope though that mobs will drop dead for me before I have to worry about all the frost nova kiting stuff that frosty mages do. Kind of the way fire mages kill most things before they get up in their face if they are non elites. (or used to at 70).

Yes I have read the GMPE for WoTLK. I reread it again today even to freshen up my rusty mage mind.

Thanks.

Arcane is great for leveling. I had a 71 fire mage respec to arcane and she is loving it. You can kill most mobs ya fight in 2-3 spells and ontop of that evocation is 2 mins so you will rarely be sitting at all. Most of what you fight will die fast and you can also make invisibility instant cast so you can run when needed ei that annoying horde/alliance shows up or you pull to much.

Yup, tried it last night. Seems just fine. Mana is not as bad as a thought. I pull mobs with slow and they are dead before they get to me. Adds can get a little squirly with some running around and whatnot but overall not to shabby. I also picked up the glyph to heal on Evocate. Having that every 2 minutes is pretty damn nice I must say.

I'm almost embarrased to say it but... I went back to frost. It seems that the respawn rate and mob density for Northrend has not yet been adjusted down from release. So there are just a crap ton of trash mobs around every quest objective.

I found with arcane that getting 3-4 adds was a death sentence. Sometimes I was able to turn tail and run but because the lower northrend zones are not that populated on my server anymore I found my self runnign into yet more mobs. This led to a long walk back from the spirit guide. ><

With frost if I get 3-4 mobs I can just hang out and kill them all. Pop Mr. Freeze and sick him on one. Sheep another 2 x nova’s with Pet and its all under control. Also for soloing same level elites frost is just so awesome. You got your frost shield. 2 x Water Elemental with cold snap. Ice Block to get the mob back on your pet and kite like crazy and you can take down some really tough elites.
Anyway I am probably just better at playing frost while leveling and would like to give Arcane another shot at 80 after I start running stuff to gear up again.
Thanks.

I was going to warn you about this when I read the first few posts. Sorry for being late :(

I had always lvled as frost but that got boring by lvl 72 (to me, lvl is by far the worst part of the game, especially alts). I went to fire and LOVED it. With dragons breath, blast wave, and the instastrikes AoE was never a issue. It was like frost but not near as boring as, "nova.. blizzard... blizzard...." Plus if you like to run things from time to time you can preform a little bit better.
