cloth for healing and leather for DPS
While I agree with the first part of this I am going to disagree majorly with the 2nd part. Ret Paladins operate more on spike damage than consistency and much like a fury warrior they are going to take a stray hit once in awhile especially if a lucky string of crits occurs in their rotation. Unlike a rogue who may dodge the attack, the paladin is most likely going to eat the full amount of any damage directed at them. Also there is very few pieces of leather gear in the game anymore than boosts strength, which is one of the key attributes to a ret paladin. Strength outweighs agility and raw +attack power nearly every time, and nearly all the gear with strength on it is plate.
Maybe the wording wasn't specific enough. Leather and mail aren't necessarily better, and if anything my advice is to go for plate whenever possible because you'll still need to be in a full set of plate for pvp/solo/pugs. But if you're in dire need of very quick regearing due to a respec or any other situation where you can increase your dps by ignoring if your gear is plate or not there will not be much problem for most PvE, it's not something you can't live with. It will however suck to be wearing less-than-plate in pvp or solo.
Even if you did it's still unlikely you'll end up in full leather, odds are you'll get mostly plate with a few pieces of mail/leather.
Also, in the case that you steal aggro you just bubble, or just get killed, in a well organized situation this isn't going to happen often unless someone is doing something wrong. It will hurt because it will block you from using the wings, but that's what happens when you steal aggro.
