Not to hate on the fine and knowledgeable prot pallies on these forums, but here is a story.

I log on for raid night, 3 drakes and Malygos. One of our tanks isn't online. Which means the guy who usually tanks spawns is now tanking a drake, and a guy who normally tanks a drake is now tanking Sartharion. Question of the night is who is tanking spawns?

"Bode we fed you a full offset full of prot gear, you're tanking". So in 20 minutes I gem and enchant my gear, respec and realize I DON'T HAVE A Prot Helm. Too hell with it, its just adds. Now at this point I would like to point out that I have not tanked anything since an RFK run while leveling this toon back in February 2007.

1st attempt I forgot about whelps, recovered but we lost some people and wiped it. 2nd attempt no one died to spawns but tank got 1 shot because it was his first time tanking Sartharion. Third attempt no adds killed anyone we got another person a twilight drake. I didn't even read my abilities I just rolled my face across the keyboard and single target taunted any mobs that got loose. Honest question with no hate intended, is there more to it than that? Seemed easier than healing and healing is pretty lewl.

If your group is positioning everything so that you don't have to grab mobs from all over the island, it's usually as easy as dropping a consecrate and tabbing around while spamming HoR and chucking a shield whenever it's off cooldown. In a straightforward situation like that, no tank has it particularly difficult these days. What makes one tank stand out more than another is their ability to adapt when things go wrong. When everything is "working as intended" it's about as difficult as a dps class spamming their standard dps rotation.

Tanking in general isn't that hard. Me and my RL friend swapped toons the other day, and I tanked a heroic on his warrior while he healed on my paladin. Run went smooth. I have a 60 warrior but I got it to 60 with RAF...afk in dungeons while my pally (prot at the time) chain pulled SM cath or BRD.

Then again healing isn't that hard. Or DPS. Once you know enough about the game, you can pretty much pick up anyone's character and play it. Look at the top players in arena, they all go to tournament realms and pick up toons they've never leveled past 15 and play them competitively at 80 for real life cash. It just comes down to knowing a few key abilities, binding them (not even necessary in most PVE situations) then facerolling.

Someone could come to my house who's never played WoW before and heal a raid just fine using my setup. I'd just tell them, right click on the bars that are losing health. They could heal a whole raid as a holy paladin with right click. Is it optimal? Not really. But it would work.

Bodh,

It's pretty much as Aurelius said; if all is going to plan then it's just case of dropping into the whole 969 thing. Things can only turn squiffy if ya have a loony toon dips who goes balls to the wall and pulls threat from you. Admittedly, I haven't been to any 10 man content as yet, and rounding up strays in a 5 man isn't exactly taxing :)

But, yeah- for the most part- not rocket science. I may well be howling a different tune when I hit Nax next week...:)

Ttfn,

Spawns got loose, random infernals got enraged.

All I did was look for giant red glowy things and taunt, strafe run to avoid getting hit from behind if I needed to move, and do the usual avoid waves and just mash buttons.

The infernals suck to try and move out of the path of the waves before they get tagged and enrage. I generally just expect that they're all going to wind up enraged at some point or another and make sure I'm not taking any shots to the back...that way if I can get them out of the waves or the dps tranq/burn them down quickly it's a pleasant surprise instead of a necessity.

Tanking the fire adds in OS isnt an overly hard job. The only real thing you have to worry about is pulling a boss if you use your aoe taunt. I MT'd a 10 man Sarth PuG and OT'd 25man Sarths in my hodge podge tanking set (I'm usually Ret) and found it easier than tanking quite a few of the 80 heroics.

Yeah its not too bad tanking adds, especially if you have a rogue keeping an eye out for enraged ones(FoKnives+anesthetic poison works great). I'm usually the drake tank, but have ended up on add duty depending on the tank situation. Drake tanking is much easier, but a little more stressful as your health will jump around a lot when both shad and vesperon are on you at the same time.
