Okay... I have been away from this for waaay too long. My mage is only 67 now, but leveling. My wife, however, just hit 80. Her armory is here. We were in Heroic UK last night and I was putting up around 1100 DPS on my lock, we had a 1300 DPS DK, a Holy Pally and my wife, at 750 DPS. Sooooo, I get to looking at her spec and was saying, "wow, this is way screwed up!", but then after looking at these forums for a LONG time (need to put the builds into the GMP...) I found a 0/53/18 build that looks very similar to what my wife was doing...

So, it must be spell rotation. For FFB spec, is it something like: scorch x5, FFB x a lot until scorh debuff is almost down, then 1x scorch again? I apologize for my lack of wisdom in this area... I actually used to be a good raiding mage in TBC (but then that was in TBC... lol).

I feel like mages got reinvented, lol.

Thanks for the help.

You didn't link the armory.

750dps is awful, I mean truly awful, might as well have been wanding with fireblasts. No one should be doing less than 1.5-2k in heroics. If they are still wearing greens etc get them into level 80 dungeons and replace them or get some crafted items.

Frostfire is pretty bad for 5mans as it benefits from longer fights than 10 seconds. Mages should never be scorching scorching x5 anymore. If she wants to stay FFB she will want glyph of scorch, molten armor, and frostfire bolt.

What rotation was she doing, were you AoEing all of the trash (like almost every single heroic works), if you are she should be Blizzarding. Have her read the elementalist post that I made. Or the arcane one if she is interested in that, etc.

Anobix;

She was not doing any that I saw (blizzard and lamestrike are both pretty obvious). I am full affliction, so I was dotting EVERYTHING in sight, so I wasn't AOEing either. I'm not convinced that my DPS is good for a hit capped lock, but that's a different forum, lol. I'll go find your elementalist post, as she tried leveling an arcane mage and didn't like it, so will never go arcane (I know, it's like saying you didn't like strained peas as a baby and not eating peas ever in your life again without trying it)... That's an argument I can't win.

Affliction Lock Trash ::

1 Target -- SBolt Spam
2 Targets -- CoA each first, Corruption Each, SBolt Spam
3 Targets -- CoA each first, Seed Spam
4+ Targets -- Depending on Threat Generation of your tank CoE a few to give him a second, Seed Spam

Locks main concern is pulling threat in these short fights - really shouldn't be an issue with a Mage. For hectic trash that needs to be AoEd just throw your Mirror Image in there first and fire away.

What I've been noticing when it comes to DPS and especially overall damage lacking is that people are just simply taking too long to act. Not starting their rotations until FAR too late. Not cleaning up the time between casting so their characters are literally wasting 50% of their free time. If any Mage has 700 DPS - or any class for that matter - it is entirely due to this problem. Even a Scorch spam will pull more than this when specced FFB. Simply put, clean up your gameplay and you'll see +50-100% returns on your damage charts. In HUK a Lock should pull 2500 easy - with greens on. Same goes for Mage. That's serious easy-mode for AoE classes.

I'm going to assume that the 750 DPS as more to do with play style more then anything. I just got done doing reg UP on my mage, at lvl 78, in quest gear and S4, and did 1100ish.

If she's clicking spells and clicking targets she's going to miss out on a lot of DPS in 5 mans. With how fast stuff is dying missing out on 1-2 casts per mob is going to hurt your DPS a lot.

My spec is fire.... all fire. I just don't care enough to respec until I hit 80. In multi mob pulls I just toss living bomb on our second target then scorch away. May toss in a dragons breath and instastrike if it's a 3-4 mob pull.

See what she's doing on longer boss fights where she gets to start a rotation, if that's still low then her rotation is probably messed up. If it's quite a bit higher then it's probably slow reaction time on trash that costing her.

Really? That's a huge amount. I'll have to get my WWS out and really look at that dps then. I thought 1100 was at least respectable.

I wouldn't think so. 1100 is what I was pulling when I was in Gruul's lair at 70.

So, I'm pulling my 'dps' numbers straight off of Recount's DPS window... are we comparing apples to apples?

are you using the overall window or a specific fight's window? overall will almost always be lower. but if you are AoEing it should be a lot higher than 1100.

I was in a similar situation a while ago... bemoaning my lackluster DPS. I tried FFB, but discovered I did not have the crit chance for it to work well (your wife doesn't either). After reading these forums a bit, I decided to try one of the arcane specs put out there by Anobix and I've been hooked on arcane ever since (and I used to hate, hate, hate it!) It's all part of that mages being re-invented thing.

It really is quite fun, easy to put out good DPS, scales well from heroics to raids, and is much easier to solo with than FFB.

I was able to get around 2500 DPS my first time setting foot in Naxx, and without really running that many heroics.

I just dinged 80 on my mage alt Sunday. I respecced to 57/3/11 at 79 to get used to the Arcane rotation and jumped into heroics at 80. At first I was doing average 1500 DPS with higher spikes. Really pretty good for wearing a bunch of quest blues. By the end of the night about 5 heroics and several heroic blue item upgrades later I was doing ~1800 with up to 2300 ish on bosses. Arcane is sick, I love it. I can see how its going to scale very well when I am geared up. Counting AB's and AM missles is making me feel OCD though lol.

I recommend getting an addon like underhood or powerauras to help you do that. underhood is very configurable, although it uses dogtags which can seem daunting at first but is really not too difficult at all to figure out. you can do a google search for wow dogtag help and I'm sure you will find some stuff. classtimer or something like that (elk buff bars also comes to mind) can also help you with configurable buff/debuff bars.
