Viable Spec?Follow

#1 Feb 27 2009 at 6:32 AM Rating: Decent
Hi all,

Attached is a link to my armory:

http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Azuremyst&n=Ballour

Since I heard from the boards that the best combat spec was Calamity's Grasp/Hailstorm until 3.1 b/c of changes to lightning reflexes. I took a different spin on the spec because of my lack of access to great weapons. I decided to run sword MH and dagger OH. Instead of dropping four points into endurance and improved sprint, I drop those flex points into Close Quarters Combat, and still keep five points in Sword Specialization. My OH dagger is Omen of Ruin and replaces the Fang of Truth from Wyrmrest Accord. My mainhand sword is Reaper of the Dark Souls from Ebon Blade.

Before someone tells me to spreadsheet it, I did and it shows a dps increase of about 30 points. Just curious to know what the smart people's thoughts on this are. Obvious if I get Greed or Crimson steel, I'll just run a combat fist/dagger build, but I had no luck with Greed in H COT last night.

Any comments welcome.

Thanks.

What would you recommend those two filler points toward? I guess it increases my garrote a very tiny amount. Maybe I should throw them into feint, but that ability hasn't been on my screen for a very long time.

Focus on getting greed. Fist/Dagger is the way to go, then you can run 15/51/5, or 7/51/13. The 5% crit for CQC is much better than Sword Spz, and if you do mix use the one from EJ, you have a few months before 3.1 anyways.

Well, anything. You only have 51 on Combat. You could throw a dart and randomly hit something else useful still in combat.

The OP needs those two points in sub to have access to Serrated (edit 1: Which I'm guessing is what you're going after), better to put them toward Sap range or stealth I guess (dealers choice), Opp is a waste.

Serrated is a decent talent for some applications but it's often considered only a solo or PvP talent and with good reason. For raiding it's not as useful an allocation of points (including the filler you need to get to it) than the investment in Assassination due to the static armor effect (rather than a percentage-based one). Raid bosses have too much armor for it to have as much of an effect as better poison damage. Even more so with the new Wrath AP scaling of poisons. If you're hell-bent on it, give it a shot and see how it goes. But I'd wager that your all-boss average DPS will suffer compared to putting the points in Assassination.

Running two weapons specializations can be great, but on those rare occasions when you're stuck in place doing zero DPS, you'll miss Imp Sprint... trust me. =)

edit 2: The term "viable" usually means "good enough" on the forums and honestly, slightly annoys me. Anyone else? Or am I just being a language fascist?

Yea I see it the same.

When i see "viable" I think "will this work?"

Yea, it will work. But so does no points.

Viable is never optimal.

But it all depends on what you are getting out of your spec.

I would never want to see a "viable" raid spec. I do feel okay when someone wants a spec that is viable to them. If they want to have certain things for aspects of play, but still have a decent enough spec to fudge numbers in a raid, well, more power to you. Just don't raid with me.

Viable is too vague. It's a stupid question. It's like asking if a pair of pants makes your butt look big.

Serrated builds have come up about the same as deeper assassin. At least from the math prior to current and semi-future changes. The problem I have with it is taking crap talents. I also have a problem with taking 2 specializations. Again the math has been fine with it but really I feel like it's a waste.
