Trinkets and other Q's for a upcoming 70 TankFollow

So if you remember I posted not too long ago about deciding between a warrior and paladin tank. I chose my pally and am now 68. I'm going to level as prot to 80. I've been trying to look for a decent set of tank gear for starting Nexus/UK. I was mainly looking at level 70 BC instances to get a decent set of gear going. If you check out my [link=http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Suramar&n=Roobe[/armory]I have started. My main question is what about trinkets? I know about the ones to get in wotlk instances, but what should I use for starting? I noticed a 33def or so trinket from shadow labs and a JC epic trinket with def and a dodge click that you needed Shattered Sun - Revered. I know there is the cobalt set at 80 but I was wondering if any of the items from BC instances would be better. Any advice on gear would be appreciated.

My second question is on my talents. I just did a quick respec from ret and didnt think much about picking up the parry from ret tree. Should I drop reckoning or some other talent and pick up 5/5 Deflection? Granted I probably wont start tanking instances till I get a set of better gear which will probably be around 70/71, but I think I should still fill out Deflection before something like reckoning.

Edit: Sorry about link, cant seem to fix it. Also any Kara gear from the easier / beginning bosses is doable. I could easily put together a pretty solid group of 4-5 80's to come along to help.

Thanks,

Korosha, 80 Druid, Resto
Silvermark, 80 Warlock, Demo
Xeath, 70 Death Knight, Unholy
Roobe, 68 Paladin, Prot

If you have 4-5 80s to come help you, just run regular Northrend Dungeons. The only thing you might not get anything decent for are trinkets. There is a quest in Netherstorm that will give you http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=30300;source=live and the figurine of the colossus from Shattered Halls or the trinket from SLabs are your choices for your other trinket.

The cobalt tanking gear starts being available at 70, there is a great BS crafted shield you can start using at 73, and the tempered saronite/daunting stuff is available in the 74-78 range. There is also a great tanking chest available from the Kalu'ak at level 76 with honored reputation (and if you aren't honored with the Kalu'ak by level 72 or so you did something very wrong!)

Dab's Enigma is a guarantee (quest reward) so take a trip to Netherstorm with a friend or two and go get it. If you think it is worth the effort, do SLabs or Shattered Halls for another trinket.

If you are really crazy, at 68 you can go into Kara and run for some tanking gear (the best stuff being the sword (Chess), the helm (Opera), the cloak (I forget) and the necklace (Maiden) although there is some other tank stuff as well) but you cannot use any of it until level 70. However, Kara is fun and would not take you long with some 80's to help you, so if you feel like it, go for it. The main problem is, it is possible that NONE of that would drop, and Kara doesn't unlock for a week, by which time you will (hopefully) be in the 73-75 range and not need any of it anymore. I would still do it once just to do it (mainly because I love Kara).

It really doesn't matter, because it does not take an exceptional tank set to tank regular UK or Nexus, and the crafted stuff along with quest rewards is enough to get you to 80 and have you start doing heroics if you plan ahead and know what to go for.

Getting a few 70 tanking trinkets and a few Kara drops would give you a head start, so it wouldn't hurt, but I wouldn't call it a necessity.

I would say it is a necessity to do all of the Coldara quests so that you get all 4 Nexus quests and then run Nexus. By doing that you get guaranteed (quest reward) tanking boots, shoulders, and gloves.

I wouldn't bother respeccing just now. Stuff like Deflection will become more vital as you start tanking more challenging stuff. The enemies in Northrend normies just don't hit that hard. Also, you'll enjoy reckoning while you're leveling. :)

Avoid getting caught in the "old world" trap.

The higher end instances at the end of TBC do have good drops, but frankly it's not needed. Get yourself into Northrend ASAP and start picking up the quest drops.

You don't need to attempt to be uncritable for non-heroic instances. My advice is to get geared up with good STA, Def, STR type gear and move on. You can tank it at 70 with few problems. Get yourself into some BS gear as soon as you are of the proper level to wear it. I *think* I used two BS shields from 70-80, then made myself the epic Titansteel one.

My point is that better gear is available to you through high end TBC instances than you'll find in early Wrath Quests. However - The effort to get them out weighs their benifits. My advice - Get to northrend quick. If you have Rep with TBC, yeah, use it, but do not focus on anything in TBC other than getting to 68 and leaving on your first boat/zep to Northrend.

I would respec as anything more than 51pts in prot is a waste for lvling. Reckoning is lame even under the best circumstances. You want to kill mobs quickly and run faster, so try something like this at 70(grab PoJ with next 2 lvls, then 2 pts in conviction, then fill out shield of the templar as you get SotR at 75, then back to conviction/crusade). With the a spec looking like this at 79. Then respec for heroics at 80.

As to trinkets, you're a JC so you get the 2 best stam trinkets in the game at lvl 75 so don't worry about it. Just make yourself a Monarch Crab and Ruby Hare as soon as you hit 75 and gem them with quality gems.

I would argue that http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=37220;source=live is the best stam trinket in the game right now, but I am being picky. The JC trinkets are exceptionally nice and you can gem them for defense and avoidance. Gemming them for defense and avoidance won't make them as good for "pure" tank trinkets as something like http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=36993;source=live from regular Halls of Lightning, but they are still nice.

The key when you hit 80 is to have at least 535 defense to start doing heroics, and even with the 2 JC trinkets that shouldn't be a problem, and all that stamina isn't going to hurt a bit either.

And you'd be wrong too. Assuming a JC uses a dragon's eye stam gem in the yellow socket to pickup the 9stam bonus on the monarch crab you get a whopping total of 137stam. The Ruby Hare with +8dodge/+12stam gems = 95stam +16 dodge which is > or at least equal to the 111stam in EH. Not to mention the on use vs proc based bonuses.
