tanking question.Follow

#1 Feb 24 2009 at 3:34 PM Rating: Decent
ok so i don't have WoW yet... but i needed some help because i'm planning to be a BE pally. (getting WoW in the next month or so, atleast by summer.... >.>)

i had a question about the tank spec.
friend one said that i needed the first 2 or so lines of ret and all of prot.
friend two said that all i needed was prot...
granted-- friend two is actually a pally and friend one is just a rouge and a really long time player. not too sure who to believe, if anyone has any advice or some websites that i could grab a spec tree from please tell me..

thanks guys.

Currently, pre-3.1, most Prot Paladins do this:

1). The only Ret talents you _need_, and the Parry and 1 of the Improved Judgments, so that you have 9-second Judgment cooldown.

2). In the Prot Tree, there are a few that some don't even bother picking up, I can't remember those off-hand, but you definitely want anything that gives you mitigation, etc. You can try looking up my armory, I have a rough example (not sure if it is 100% correct):

http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Moon+Guard&n=Hirai

Now, once 3.1 hits Live, you will get extra talents (namely, from being able to drop Kings, as all Paladins will get it naturally). This will obviously open up other things.

It depends on what you're tanking. I use a 5/60/6 build for general raid & heroic tankage.

As you don't currently HAVE a toon (You don't have WoW) I would suggest you spend more time looking into quick leveling and Ret builds. (I'm a tankadin, so I'm not biased.) But you should roll Ret for fast lvling to 80.

IF you have your heart set on tanking - plz note you CAN tank as Ret through ALL of Vanilla WoW, and in some places in the 1st Expansion (TBC).

Again - IF you just MUST tank to lvl from 1-80 at least do yourself the favor of rolling Ret till 35ish. Around that lvl you can start to AOE tank and the tank spec, while not as FAST as the Retro Spec, becomes pretty efficient.

thanks guys, i'll def check out all this stuff.

mindel-- could you tell me what the numbers mean? is that how many points that you've placed in each section of the skill tree?

and yeah, i've been checking out some leveling guides, but today on the bus my friend was telling me about his add-ons, he uses WoWMatrix, and uses a different quest helper add-on (can't remember the name right now) but he said that one is better than the WoWmatrix addon, so i'll more than likely check that out when i get WoW..

again, thanks guys and if you have any more tips i'd appreciate them. also i'll be on Bloodscalp, bloodelf. just incase anyone has further tips that they are wanting to give.. (if it's not taken my name will be Blackstar, if it is look for schwarstern)

ah now wouldnt that be nice but eh see they changed some stuff also heres what i have from mmo

http://talent.mmo-champion.com/?paladin=050000000000000000000000005305350031523133331230150100000000000000000000000&glyph=121807050400&version=9626

see they changed AD so you have to spend 5 points into reckoning before you can pick it up so i have a feeling alot of pallies are gonna pick it up to get AD. atm from the build i'm makeing i have like 3 extra points. take that back 1 point after picking up unyealding faith. only thing is i hear they are adding another tallent to tier one so that is gonna be off and if they do and they add the one i hear about we aint gonna have any free tallents really.

Until I see this in patch notes, I'm thinking it's just a bug with MMO's talent calculator. If you look, there's no arrow showing talent progression like there are for other talents that require a previous talent for access. The same thing happened with Guarded by the Light and Judgements of the Just.

Yes. If you click the link, it will take you to the talent trees themselves.

Update to this: the calculator no longer requires points in Reckoning to get Ardent Defender, nor do the other talents I mentioned require points spent in other talents anymore. So yes, was a bug.

Still doesn't have the new Prot talent though ...
