so I read a common use of Mind Vision is at the Warsong gulch arena being used to locate the opposing flag carrier. My understanding is that you can look at the chat log and see who picked up your flag and mind vision them to locate that person. Assuming i understand this correctly, how do your write a macro to use mind vision on an individual you dont have targeted. (Im a macro vet of FFXI, and making the switch over is proving difficult, ha).
The line would logically read:

cast spell "Mind Vison" on <insert name here>

If there is no such macro line, how is it that MV proves of any use in arenas...?

Hmm!
That's a good idea.

Testing it out a bit, I find Mind Vision does in fact work without any line of sight. I can Mind Vision an NPC from outside it's building, so in theory you should be able to Mind Vision a player with a flag so long as they're in range.

That would actually be immensely useful. Defensively, if you want to know if they're coming down the slope, tunnel, or cliff/graveyard from your base so you can effectively tell the team how to intercept them. Ultimately, I think the power is in Offense. Flag bearers like to hide, and there's a number of little nooks and crannies they can stuff themselves into on either side of the playing field. Even if it took you a few seconds to target and cast, it's less of an issue offensively than defensively because instead of trying to locate an opponent fleeing out of your range your approaching an opponent whose intent is to wait.

As for the macro, I'm in the same boat as you.
I just can't think of anything beyond the simple "target the person manually and cast".

For the sake of expediency when typing, you can shorten /target to /tar.
Also, the first two letters of the Flag Bearer's name instead of the whole thing.

for example:
/target zemzelett
can be reasonably shortened to
/tar ze

Maybe a resident macro guru can do better?

In the days before enemy flag carriers appeared on your minimap after a certain elapsed time, mind vision was a powerful tool in WSG when the enemy was hiding with the flag. It’s still useful to spot which exit flag carriers are using, or to scout enemy defenses. Pet classes can do a weaker, shorter range version of the same by targeting the FC and sending their pet to attack, then following the pet.

Unfortunately, there’s no macro or script command that will recognize who the enemy flag carrier is and target them for you. You will have to type “/tar (enemy name)”, then cast the spell. (The first three or four letters of the name are usually a unique enough identifier.) You could hotkey the spell itself to save a little time, I suppose.

If the character’s name starts with an international character, you could have real trouble implementing this tactic. This is a good reason to report names that start with international characters. :)

Another PVP use of mind vision applies when you see a lone, hostile rogue or druid riding your way. Target them and mind vision them: the spell and your targeting persist even if they stealth. Unless they blow a cooldown like vanish or cloak of shadows to break your channel, you can cast an instant like shadow word: pain on them the second they get in range, knocking them out of stealth and denying them an opener. I get a lot of use out of this tactic when guarding the LM and farm in AB and at all the EoTS nodes.

In order to /tar someone they would have to be within targeting range, however, and the range for Mind Vision is much larger than that.

You'd probably have to mind-hop around to get where you want to go.

Unfortunately, i couldn't find a mod that scans the log to find out who has the flag. But maybe it could be done, and that mod could put the target on focus :D

"/target"'s range is not very large. For example, if an ally has the flag on their roof, you'd have to be at least at the huts near ally base to be able to do the target. But .. you could target the flag carrier as he runs away, and FOCUS him. Then, you can always click on his profile and cast mind vision, as this can be done without problems even from your base. Then, if you have him mind visioned, you can set new focus if they change the FC...

So .. the macro you requested can be done, provided you do "/focus" on the FC.
Then the macro is:

/cast [target=focus] Mind Vision
