Okay, here's your chance to tell me "ur doin' it wrong!"

I've got three equipment upgrades that I am waffling about. I'm totally overthinking this, I know, but for some reason I can't let go of the idea that these "upgrades" might not actually be upgrades. I think at least part of it is that I spent 80 levels focusing mainly on AGI and these upgrades are gonna cost me quite a bit of that. Here's my present gear (keep in mind I'm still working on upgrading everything, so it's not all great.) I've still got the stuff I upgraded from in the bank because I am torn on it.

The mainhand weapon, Knife of Incision, is my first problem. It's epic, yes, an upgrade from Fang of Truth. This upgrade, however, cost me 13 AGI and 33 hit rating, but gained me 29 crit and 30 AP. Was this a good upgrade?

My second item of angst is the ring. Tonight in Heroic HoS I replaced Signet of Bridenbrad with The Prospector's Prize. While this upgrade netted me a whopping 35 hit rating (and put me at the hit cap, it appears) it cost me 24 AGI, 18 crit and 68 AP.

Finally, there's the legs. Leggings of the Stone Halls dropped tonight, and I'm considering them as a replacement for my Giantmaim Legguards. Before I spend the money on the leg armor for them, however, I need to decide if they are worth it. They net me +64 crit and +42 AP but at the expense of 30 AGI.

So, if I go with Knife of Incision, The Prospector's Prize and Leggings of the Stone Halls, assuming all enchants/leg armor/etc remains the same, here's the net gains and losses:

-67 AGI
+75 Crit rating
+4 Attack Power
+2 Hit rating (this seems to be all I need to hit the cap, because when I mixed and matched my gear to get more hit rating, it didn't change.)

So...they're good upgrades, right? No? Halp?!!!

I keep seeing this response to other people, to which my thought is "WHAT damn spreadsheet?!"

I looked through the FAQ and couldn't see any links to any spreadsheet. So if you could be so kind as to tell me what and where the mysterious "spreadsheet" is that would be just peachy.

Thank you very much. I checked the FAQ a number of times and just could not find it.

Now I just gotta figure out where I stashed my MS Office disk when I made the switch to OpenOffice during my last computer rebuild ://

And here I thought the spreadsheet was as common knowledge as "don't use strength gear"....

It will be in the WotLK FAQ btw, as well as a small guide on comparing items without the spreadsheet.

Edit: here's the "guide" to determining which gear is better for you.
Quote:
Which gear should I use?
Use the Spreadsheet for lvl 80.
At any earlier level, just use your brain and compare them manually.
For example at level 63 you might have to choose between Fel Iron Greatsword and Silver Edged Axe of the Bandit
Step One is to write the stats the pieces give on paper.
This would be +30 critical strike rating, +62 Attack Power versus +24 Agility, +36 Stamina, +48 Attack Power.
(at this step, add extra's gained through talents such as Careful Aim, Hunter versus Wild and Lightning reflexes)

Step Two is to break things down to the basics:
1 Agility gives about half the crit of 1 crit rating so we will treat the 24 agility as 12 crit rating and 24 AP.
Now it's +30 crit and +62 AP versus +36 stamina, +12 crit and +72 attack power.

Step Three is to leave out all the unnecessary bits:
Since both weapons have (at least) 62 attack power and 12 crit rating we can leave that out of the equation.
So we end up with +18 crit versus 36 stamina and 10 attack power.

Step Four is the conclusion:
Here, it comes down to preference and you will have to ask yourself some questions.
Obviously, 18 critical strike rating will give you more dps than 10 attack power so you will have to evaluate for yourself whether you have a use for that extra 360 health.

Talents of course affect these kind of equations, but you'll have to figure all that out for yourself.
If you follow the steps I did above you are sure to come out with an obvious answer nearly every time.

Links aren't in here and it's probably not very clear or without spelling errors yet but I'm working on it Smiley: grin

It also helps to google.

It's the first link if you google 'hunter spreadsheet'.

ratings buster is a fantastic addon for assessing different pieces of gear.
