Questions about FFB builds.Follow

#1 Feb 22 2009 at 2:22 AM Rating: Decent
So I just hit 74 last night and decided it would be good idea to do some research on FFB, even though it'll probably be another two weeks before I hit 75 due to my lack of free time... I went to the Oboards and read the FAQ on there for FFB, which was interesting. I was bothered by the fact that the preferred build seems to be heavy fire though. I've been a frost mage since level 10 and I've gotten quite used to the spells in the frost tree, particularly Ice Barrier and my elemental. I made a heavy frost FFB build and was curious what you all think of it and if it was good for leveling or if I should just stick with the build I have currently until I hit 80 and start doing heroics and raiding. Thanks.

Pretty much every 80 pve build is attempting to maximize dps in heroics or raids. They are not leveling builds. Going heavy fire over frost gains dps in exchange for survivability, which you shouldn't have to worry about with a decent tank. IMO, I'd stick with frost til 80 for leveling. Non-elite mobs go down fast with any spec but frost has better mana efficiency and survivability matters when soloing elites or if you're on a pvp server.

the build that you linked would be fine for leveling, although frostbolt would probably just be better as it scales better until you get better gear and hit 80 to start using FFB.

And the reason that FFB is heavy-fire is so that it gets all of its multipliers and stuff to make it viable.

Without being able to have both Shatter and Burnout at the same time, FFB is kinda mediocre for leveling. That said, it's a great opener for a fire mage until later on.

All right, thanks guys. I guess I'll just stick with my frost build for now then. :-) Makes me sad that I'm going to lose my elemental when I hit 80 though, I'm going to miss him!

BTW...

Just for ***** and giggles, lemme know how that build works out for you if you try it when raiding at 80. Where you're missing quite a bit of extra Crit Damage, your crit chance remains high and I would actually venture to guess your regular FFB Hits would be higher for the majority of the fight. Where you're missing Hot Streak you've picked up Brain Freeze. Scorch is replaced by Winters Chill. And while your Water elemental is not so great in the damage department, the replenishment from it is definitely worth something in some of those longer fights.

The real big deals you are missing are Living Bomb and Molten Fury, a measly 3 points that boost DPS by a good 20 or 30%. The Funny thing about this build would be that you have no delay in DPS building - you sorta just start slingin' FFBs. IMHO its a nice way to knock out the Crit% Debuff of a FFB while also adding some of the utility of a Frost Mage to a Raid group - just be prepared to see lower numbers than fire.

Wasted Talent points = Impact, Shattered Barrier, and the 3rd point in Frostbite... unless you'll still be doing PVP.

::Edit::

Glyphs would be what, guys? Frostfire, Molten Armor, and Water Elemental?

It would be a novel way to do things but the lack of empowered fire will cut the damage short. add in the longer cast time (unless haste is stacked) it might not be worth it. unless FoF procs enough you need a serious amount of work to catch up with a fire based FFB spec.

and yes I would say the glyph choices should be the ones you listed.
