Posted this in the general forum but someone suggested there may be a better response here:

A bit of advice please guys. My hit rating is 205, so not hit capped. I was on something like 266 when I had the Chestplate of Eck equipped. I now have the Heroes Redemption Chestpiece which doesn't give a hit bonus.

Being a blacksmith I have gemmed my gloves and girdle with an extra socket. Would you gem from the loss in hit rating with 2 x Rigid Autumn Glow (+16 hit each) or stick 2 x Bold Scarlett Ruby (+16 strength each)?

Or maybe use other gems? I'm a bit confused!

TIA.

As a ret paladin, you never gem for hit. As a rule, you gem for Strength, Strength, more Strength, the RED meta gem, and either one green gem, or one purple + one orange gem, or a Prismatic gem.

Hit rating isn't necessary for a ret pally. Just go with what you get on your gear.

detailed discussion from a few weeks ago.

I also did some back of the envelope calculations, that shows even in the most favorable conditions for adding hit: very high swing damage, and a HR of 0, 16 STR still adds more dps than 16 hit. Only gem for STR.

For gear, str also, but hit and crit are also good, expertise is sort of good, agi is meh haste is bleh and a pen is junk.
