Feeling Like A FailureFollow

When I look at Aethien's pre-raid checklist it seems like I'm in pretty good shape both in terms of gear and in terms of stats to go into Naxx-10 but my DPS still sucks (~1500 in H VH last night, did ~1700 in VoA-25 last week) and I'm just not sure why.

Here is my armory. Most pieces are straight off Aethien's recommended gear and are acceptably enchanted/gemmed (I can't afford some of the pricier enchants yet, but have gotten the best that I could afford). Right now I'm grinding rep with the Sons of Hodir to get the shoulder enchant and the Argent Crusade to get this chest. I have enough emblems of heroism to get this neck, so I'll pick that up tonight. Whenever possible I'm gemming for +hit because I'm only at 5.5%.

As for glyphs I have serpent sting, steady shot and improved aspect of the hawk.

My shot rotation is hunters mark > serpent sting > chimera > spam steady shot > chimera > spam steady shot> etc., reapplying serpent sting if necessary.

So my question to you all is what am I doing wrong? My guild wants me to be around 2k dps to run Naxx-10 with them and from all I've read I can't figure out why I'm not hitting that mark. Right now I'm the best geared/performing hunter in my guild so I have no one there to ask for advice. Is my shot rotation crap? Am I still undergeared? Do I need more hit - should I respec my talents to pick up 3/3 in Focused Aim? Should I gem for +AP instead of +hit? I'm trying so hard but I just keep falling short of the mark.

Thank you for your time and advice.

YOur hit rating is crap, not a whole lot you can do about that without getting new gear. Have you thought about speccign SV? It does more dps than MM.

What pet are you using. Even as SV my pet still does almost 650 dps on bosses. You seem to be doing everything right, give a different spec a try and see how that works for you.

*edit* Go pick up the wyrmrest or ebon blade rep one handers, put titanium chains on both of them. Give that a shot.

1) Use aimed and arcane shot.
That serves 2 functions, 1: these shots do more damage than steady shot and 2 they are instant so you have a lower need for haste rating.
Aimed can be harsh on your mana, but as long as you have JoW you'll be fine.
If you don't have it you can leave it out, but always shoot arcane every cooldown.
Arcane does more damage than steady and costs the same mana.

2) Other Meta, 21 agi and 3% critdamage is absolutely necessary, that meta alone gives a good amount of dps.

3) **** the necklace, go for the trinket. best thing you can get with badges and the hardest to replace.

4) Get the crafted blue bracers, as long as you can use the hit they're better than your epics ones or those from Keristrasza.

5) Run H. Nexus until your eyes bleed, or until you have the trinket. Most likely the former will happen first.

Doesn't Chimera refresh Serpent? I don't think you need to waste a shot trying to refresh it, just make sure you are shooting Chimera every CD reset.

1) What Aethien says is truth, great advice there.

2) Are you using Volley on Trash mobs? I am not sure if you were posting boss or overall DPS but you should be higher than that. Any trash mob 3+ I would use it (or maybe throw in an occasional multi depending on spec)

3) Don't forget your pet. Even though it's CD is longer now, cast Kill Command. Is your pet using it's specials? Rabid is a must, make sure that it is autocasting- if not, put it on your bar and get it casting.

4) Like Aeth said.. run H Nex. The hit trinket is sweet.

5) Like Rink said, grind rep with Ebon Blade first. You can always use the Wintergrasp AP shoulder enchant for now, hit is more important. (unless you are just a grind machine, then do all 3)

6) Isn't there a sword from Wyrmrest rep also? (can't look it up ATM, at work)

yes, Wrymrest has the Fang of Truth and its only honored.

And the bracers that Aethian mentioned (I think) is the Eaglebane Bracers which are freaking great. I do have to mention that I bought mine on the AH for 30G buyout!!!!

From what you all have said I see some definite areas I can improve my performance:

- new swords with titanium chains and new bracers
- rework my UI and key bindings to allow easier access to arcane and aimed shots and kill command - I'm not using these as often as I should
- regem my helm
- redo my pet's action bar to make sure rabid is auto casting - I currently run with a cat and have no desire to lvl a raptor at this point
- learn to love H Nexus

I don't know if I'm ready to respec SV yet - I'm hesitant to do this because the shot rotation seems more complicated than MM and I definitely need something pretty simple. I'm a bit limited here by my own meager video game skills.

Thank you for your help!

I forgot to add a point, get WWS and record whatever raid you are in, maybe some extended practise dummy tests or even just heroics.

If you don't feel comfortable posting those here out in the open you can PM them to me and I'll try to help you get as much improvement out of it as you can. :)

Don’t forget to add a Eternal Belt Buckle to that belt. I think people missed that point because your belt comes with a socket to begin with. You can put a hit gem in there to push yourself a bit closer to cap and it doesn’t effect the socket bonus.

Another option is that you can purposely float 40 points under cap and use Snapper Extreme or Worg Tartare. I’m not sure if food buffs transfer to pets though, so you might want to do extra research on that before trying it as an option.

No I ignored it because it easily runs up to a hundred gold for a rather small upgrade.
Simply something that's not worth it for a blue in my opinion.

I think it varies by server--mine was only 20g, easily the cheapest improvement I made to my gear (except the Inscription shoulder enchants). Even with the +hit gem I picked up it was only about 50g total. It's worth looking into at least.

Recent upgrade? When I looked at her armory she was wearing Vereesa's Silver Chain Belt. If I spent 40 badges for a belt I would pay to add a socket as well.

Guildie made mine for free, and the gem I used was in the guild bank. Not expensive at all... ;) Also, even though blue, sometimes it's a worthy investment if it gets you up to the "quota" some expect of you for raiding. I mean, honestly, with the wealth that's available in northrend, is 100g all that much anyway?

I want to extend my sincerest thanks to you all for your advice - especially Aethien and Rinkkel. I ran VoA-25 last night and was just shy of 2k dps because of the changes you all suggested both in gear and shot rotation.

Thank you, too, for the suggestion about the belt buckle - I ended up adding that and a prismatic gem. It was expensive, but it allows me a little more flexibility with the rest of my gems while still meeting the requirements for my new meta gem. I am now hit capped with over 29% crit and 3700 AP with AotDH on.

My guild is also very happy and has assured me a place on our next Naxx-10 run. :D I have also decided to invest in more memory for my computer and to upgrade my video card because I think my 'puter is holding me back a little - it's 3 years old and I have a lot of issues with lag.

Thank you all!
